- ItemAn adaptive SUPG method for evolutionary convection-diffusion equations(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2013) de Frutos, Javier; García-Archilla, Bosco; John, Volker; Novo, JuliaAn adaptive algorithm for the numerical simulation of time-dependent convectiondiffusion-reaction equations will be proposed and studied. The algorithm allows the use of the natural extension of any error estimator for the steady-state problem for controlling local refinement and coarsening. The main idea consists in considering the SUPG solution of the evolutionary problem as the SUPG solution of a particular steady-state convectiondiffusion problem with data depending on the computed solution. The application of the error estimator is based on a heuristic argument by considering a certain term to be of higher order. This argument is supported in the one-dimensional case by numerical analysis. In the numerical studies, particularly the residual-based error estimator from [18] will be applied, which has proved to be robust in the SUPG norm. The effectivity of this error estimator will be studied and the numerical results (accuracy of the solution, fineness of the meshes) will be compared with results obtained by utilizing the adaptive algorithm proposed in [6]
- ItemAdaptive time step control for higher order variational time discretizations applied to convection-diffusion equations(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2014) Ahmed, Naveed; John, VolkerHigher order variational time stepping schemes allow an efficient post-processing for computing a higher order solution. This paper presents an adaptive algorithm whose time step control utilizes the post-processed solution. The algorithm is applied to convection-dominated convection-diffusion equations. It is shown that the length of the time step properly reflects the dynamics of the solution. The numerical costs of the adaptive algorithm are discussed.
- ItemAnalysis of a full space-time discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations by a local projection stabilization(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2015) Ahmed, Naveed; Rebollo, Tomás Chacón; John, Volker; Rubino, SamueleA finite element error analysis of a local projection stabilization (LPS) method for the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The focus is on the highorder term-by-term stabilization method that has one level, in the sense that it is defined on a single mesh, and in which the projection-stabilized structure of standard LPS methods is replaced by an interpolation-stabilized structure. The main contribution is on proving, theoretically and numerically, the optimal convergence order of the arising fully discrete scheme. In addition, the asymptotic energy balance is obtained for slightly smooth flows. Numerical studies support the analytical results and illustrate the potential of the method for the simulation of turbulent ows. Smooth unsteady flows are simulated with optimal order of accuracy.
- ItemAnalysis of algebraic flux correction schemes(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2015) Barrenechea, Gabriel R.; John, Volker; Knobloch, PetrA family of algebraic flux correction schemes for linear boundary value problems in any space dimension is studied. These methods main feature is that they limit the fluxes along each one of the edges of the triangulation, and we suppose that the limiters used are symmetric. For an abstract problem, the existence of a solution, existence and uniqueness of the solution of a linearized problem, and an a priori error estimate, are proved under rather general assumptions on the limiters. For a particular (but standard in practice) choice of the limiters, it is shown that a local discrete maximum principle holds. The theory developed for the abstract problem is applied to convection-diffusion-reaction equations, where in particular an error estimate is derived. Numerical studies show its sharpness.
- ItemAnalysis of the PSPG stabilization for the continuous-in-time discretization of the evolutionary stokes equations(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2013) John, Volker; Novo, JuliaOptimal error estimates for the pressure stabilized Petrov-Galerkin (PSPG) method for the continuous-in-time discretization of the evolutionary Stokes equations are proved in the case of regular solutions. The main result is applicable to higher order finite elements. The error bounds for the pressure depend on the error of the pressure at the initial time. An approach is suggested for choosing the discrete initial velocity in such a way that this error is bounded. The "instability of the discrete pressure for small time steps", which is reported in the literature, is discussed on the basis of the analytical results. Numerical studies confirm the theoretical results, showing in particular that this instability does not occur for the proposed initial condition.
- ItemAn assessment of discretizations for convection-dominated convection-diffusion equations(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2011) Augustin, Matthias; Caiazzo, Alfonso; Fiebach, André; Fuhrmann, Jürgen; John, Volker; Linke, Alexander; Umla, RudolfThe performance of several numerical schemes for discretizing convection-dominated convection-diffusion equations will be investigated with respect to accuracy and efficiency. Accuracy is considered in measures which are of interest in applications. The study includes an exponentially fitted finite volume scheme, the Streamline-Upwind Petrov--Galerkin (SUPG) finite element method, a spurious oscillations at layers diminishing (SOLD) finite element method, a finite element method with continuous interior penalty (CIP) stabilization, a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method, and a total variation diminishing finite element method (FEMTVD). A detailed assessment of the schemes based on the Hemker example will be presented.
- ItemAn assessment of two classes of variational multiscale methods for the simulation of incompressible turbulent flows(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2020) Ahmed, Naveed; John, VolkerA numerical assessment of two classes of variational multiscale (VMS) methods for the simulation of incompressible flows is presented. Two types of residual-based VMS methods and two types of projection-based VMS methods are included in this assessment. The numerical simulations are performed at turbulent channel flow problems with various friction Reynolds numbers. It turns out the the residual-based VMS methods, in particular when used with a pair of inf-sup stable finite elements, give usually the most accurate results for second order statistics. For this pair of finite element spaces, a flexible GMRES method with a Least Squares Commutator (LSC) preconditioner proved to be an efficient solver.
- ItemA comparative study of a direct discretization and an operator-splitting solver for population balance systems(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2014) Anker, Felix; Ganesan, Sashikumaar; John, Volker; Schmeyer, EllenA direct discretization approach and an operator-splitting scheme are applied for the numerical simulation of a population balance system which models the synthesis of urea with a uni-variate population. The problem is formulated in axisymmetric form and the setup is chosen such that a steady state is reached. Both solvers are assessed with respect to the accuracy of the results, where experimental data are used for comparison, and the efficiency of the simulations. Depending on the goal of simulations, to track the evolution of the process accurately or to reach the steady state fast, recommendations for the choice of the solver are given.
- ItemDirect discretizations of bi-variate population balance systems with finite difference schemes of different order(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2013) John, Volker; Suciu, CarinaThe accurate and efficient simulation of bi-variate population balance systems is nowadays a great challenge since the domain spanned by the external and internal coordinates is five-dimensional. This report considers direct discretizations of this equation in tensorproduct domains. In this situation, finite difference methods can be applied. The studied model includes the transport of dissolved potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and of energy (temperature) in a laminar flow field as well as the nucleation and growth of KDP particles. Two discretizations of the coupled model will be considered which differ only in the discretization of the population balance equation: a first order monotone upwind scheme and a third order essentially on-oscillatory (ENO) scheme. The Dirac term on the right-hand side of this equation is discretized with a finite volume method. The numerical results show that much different results are obtained even in the class of direct discretizations.
- ItemError analysis of a SUPG-stabilized POD-ROM method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) John, Volker; Moreau, Baptiste; Novo, JuliaA reduced order model (ROM) method based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is analyzed for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The streamline-upwind Petrov--Galerkin (SUPG) stabilization is used in the practically interesting case of dominant convection, both for the full order method (FOM) and the ROM simulations. The asymptotic choice of the stabilization parameter for the SUPG-ROM is done as proposed in the literature. This paper presents a finite element convergence analysis of the SUPG-ROM method for errors in different norms. The constants in the error bounds are uniform with respect to small diffusion coefficients. Numerical studies illustrate the performance of the SUPG-ROM method.
- ItemError analysis of the SUPG finite element disretization of evolutionary convection-diffusion-reaction equations(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2010) John, Volker; Novo, JuliaConditions on the stabilization parameters are explored for different approaches in deriving error estimates for the SUPG finite element stabilization of time-dependent convection-diffusion-reaction equations that is combined with the backward Euler method. Standard energy arguments lead to estimates for stabilization parameters that depend on the length of the time step. The stabilization vanishes in the time-continuous limit. However, based on numerical experiences, this seems not to be the correct behavior. For this reason, the time-continuous case is analyzed under certain conditions on the coefficients of the equation and the finite element method. An error estimate with the standard order of convergence is derived for stabilization parameters of the same form that is optimal for the steady-state problem. Numerical studies support the analytical results.
- ItemExistence of solutions of a finite element flux-corrected-transport scheme(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2020) John, Volker; Knobloch, PetrThe existence of a solution is proved for a nonlinear finite element flux-corrected-transport (FEM-FCT) scheme with arbitrary time steps for evolutionary convection-diffusion-reaction equations and transport equations.
- ItemFinite element methods for the incompressible Stokes equations with variable viscosity(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2015) John, Volker; Kaiser, Kristine; Novo, JuliaFinite element error estimates are derived for the incompressible Stokes equations with variable viscosity. The ratio of the supremum and the infimum of the viscosity appears in the error bounds. Numerical studies show that this ratio can be observed sometimes. However, often the numerical results show a weaker dependency on the viscosity.
- ItemFinite element pressure stabilizations for incompressible flow problems(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2019) John, Volker; Knobloch, Petr; Wilbrandt, UlrichDiscretizations of incompressible flow problems with pairs of finite element spaces that do not satisfy a discrete inf-sup condition require a so-called pressure stabilization. This paper gives an overview and systematic assessment of stabilized methods, including the respective error analysis.
- ItemFinite elements for scalar convection-dominated equations and incompressible flow problems - A never ending story?(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2017) John, Volker; Knobloch, Petr; Novo, JuliaThe contents of this paper is twofold. First, important recent results concerning finite element methods for convection-dominated problems and incompressible flow problems are described that illustrate the activities in these topics. Second, a number of, in our opinion, important problems in these fields are discussed.

- ItemGrad-div stabilization for the evolutionary Oseen problem with inf-sup stable finite elements(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2015) Frutos, Javier de; García-Archilla, Bosco; John, Volker; Novo, JuliaThe approximation of the time-dependent Oseen problem using inf-sup stable mixed finite elements in a Galerkin method with grad-div stabilization is studied. The main goal is to prove that adding a grad-div stabilization term to the Galerkin approximation has a stabilizing effect for small viscosity. Both the continuous-in-time and the fully discrete case (backward Euler method, the two-step BDF, and CrankNicolson schemes) are analyzed. In fact, error bounds are obtained that do not depend on the inverse of the viscosity in the case where the solution is sufficiently smooth. The bounds for the divergence of the velocity as well as for the pressure are optimal. The analysis is based on the use of a specific Stokes projection. Numerical studies support the analytical results
- ItemA local projection stabilization finite element method with nonlinear crosswind diffusion for convection-diffusion-reaction equations(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2012) Barrenechea, Gabriel R.; John, Volker; Knobloch, PetrAn extension of the local projection stabilization (LPS) finite element method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations is presented and analyzed, both in the steady-state and the transient setting. In addition to the standard LPS method, a nonlinear crosswind diffusion term is introduced that accounts for the reduction of spurious oscillations. The existence of a solution can be proved and, depending on the choice of the stabilization parameter, also its uniqueness. Error estimates are derived which are supported by numerical studies. These studies demonstrate also the reduction of the spurious oscillations.
- ItemA local projection stabilization/continuous Galerkin-Petrov method for incompressible flow problems(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2016) Ahmed, Naveed; John, Volker; Matthies, Gunar; Novo, JuliaThe local projection stabilization (LPS) method in space is considered to approximate the evolutionary Oseen equations. Optimal error bounds independent of the viscosity parameter are obtained in the continuous-in-time case for the approximations of both velocity and pressure. In addition, the fully discrete case in combination with higher order continuous Galerkin-Petrov (cGP) methods is studied. Error estimates of order k + 1 are proved, where k denotes the polynomial degree in time, assuming that the convective term is time-independent. Numerical results show that the predicted order is also achieved in the general case of time-dependent convective terms.
- ItemMeasurement and simulation of a droplet population in a turbulent flow field(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2011) Bordás, Robert; John, Volker; Schmeyer, Ellen; Thévenin, DomniqueThe interaction of a disperse droplet population (spray) in a turbulent flow field is studied by combining wind tunnel experiments with simulations based on the model of a population balance system. The behavior of the droplets is modeled numerically by a population balance equation. Velocities of the air and of the droplets are determined by non-intrusive measurements. A direct discretization of the 4D equation for the droplet size distribution is used in the simulations. Important components of the numerical algorithm are a variational multiscale method for turbulence modeling, an upwind scheme for the 4D equation and a pre-processing approach to evaluate the aggretation integrals. The simulations of this system accurately predict the modifications of the droplet size distribution from the inlet to the outlet of the measurement section. Since the employed configuration is simple and considering that all measurement data are freely available thanks to an Internet-based repository, the considered experiment is proposed as a benchmark problem for the simulation of disperse two-phase turbulent flows.
