    Rejected papers in academic publishing: Turning negatives into positives to maximize paper acceptance

    There are ample reasons why papers might get rejected by peer-reviewed journals, and the experience can be, especially for those who have had little experience, sobering. When papers get rejected a number of times, that may signal that there are problems with the paper (e.g., weak methodology or lack of robust analyses), that it is insufficiently developed, is poorly written, or that it is too topic-specific and needs to find an appropriate niche journal. In the case of a single or multiple rejections, whenever there is feedback from a journal, as well as reasons for rejection, this provides a useful signal for improving the paper before it is resubmitted to another journal. This article examines literature related to the rejection of papers in academic journals, encompassing the opinions and experiences offered by authors, as well as advice suggested by editors, allowing readers and authors who experience rejections to reflect on the possible reasons that may have led to that outcome. Many papers related to this topic were published as editorials or opinions, offering advice on how to improve aspects of a submitted paper in order to increase its chances of acceptance.

    Scientific publishing sanctions in response to the Russo-Ukrainian war

    The Russian invasion of Ukraine is negatively affecting the development of the Ukrainian academy, now and in the foreseeable future. Different academic stakeholders around the world have reacted differently to this war, some imposing sanctions against Russia and/or providing aid to Ukraine. Some scientific publishers have partially or temporarily suspended sales and marketing of products and services to research organizations in Russia and Belarus. The issue of banning publication in international journals by authors from Russian institutions remains controversial and needs to be carefully considered by various stakeholders. © 2022 The Authors.     Unlocking the hidden realms: analysing the Ukrainian journal landscape with Ulrichsweb

    Although Ukraine is one of the leading countries in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of its number of scholarly journals, most of these journals are not widely recognized by the scientific community. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of scholarly journal publishing in Ukraine, using data from the Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory. The study aims to provide insights into the quantity and characteristics of Ukrainian journals, with a specific focus on historical context, publisher diversity, language of publication, and subject distribution. The findings reveal that Ulrichsweb encompasses details on over 1,500 active Ukrainian journal titles, some tracing their origins back to the 19th century. Notably, 85% of these journals are disseminated by academic institutions, including universities and research organizations. This study exemplifies the utility of Ulrichsweb as a valuable tool for investigating national scholarly journals underrepresented in other databases.
