- Item19F NMR-, ESR-, and vis-NIR-spectroelectrochemical study of the unconventional reduction behaviour of a perfluoroalkylated fullerene: dimerization of the C70(CF3)10− radical anion(Cambridge : Soc., 2015) Zalibera, Michal; Machata, Peter; Clikeman, Tyler T.; Rosenkranz, Marco; Strauss, Steven H.; Boltalina, Olga V.; Popov, Alexey A.The most abundant isomer of C70(CF3)10 (70-10-1) is a rare example of a perfluoroalkylated fullerene exhibiting electrochemically irreversible reduction. We show that electrochemical reversibility at the first reduction step is achieved at scan rates higher than 500 V s−1. Applying ESR-, vis-NIR-, and 19F NMR-spectroelectrochemistry, as well as mass spectrometry and DFT calculations, we show that the (70-10-1)− radical monoanion is in equilibrium with a singly-bonded diamagnetic dimeric dianion. This study is the first example of 19F NMR spectroelectrochemistry, which promises to be an important method for the elucidation of redox mechanisms of fluoroorganic compounds. Additionally, we demonstrate the importance of combining different spectroelectrochemical methods and quantitative analysis of the transferred charge and spin numbers in the determination of the redox mechanism.
- Item(BB)-Carboryne Complex of Ruthenium: Synthesis by Double B-H Activation at a Single Metal Center(Washington, DC : ACS Publications, 2016) Eleazer, Bennett J.; Smith, Mark D.; Popov, Alexey A.; Peryshkov, Dmitry V.The first example of a transition metal (BB)-carboryne complex containing two boron atoms of the icosahedral cage connected to a single exohedral metal center (POBBOP)Ru(CO)2 (POBBOP = 1,7-OP(i-Pr)2-2,6-dehydro-m-carborane) was synthesized by double B-H activation within the strained m-carboranyl pincer framework. Theoretical calculations revealed that the unique three-membered (BB)>Ru metalacycle is formed by two bent B-Ru σ-bonds with the concomitant increase of the bond order between the two metalated boron atoms. The reactivity of the highly strained electron-rich (BB)-carboryne fragment with small molecules was probed by reactions with electrophiles. The carboryne-carboranyl transformations reported herein represent a new mode of cooperative metal-ligand reactivity of boron-based complexes.
- ItemBetween Aromatic and Quinoid Structure: A Symmetrical UV to Vis/NIR Benzothiadiazole Redox Switch(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2020) Rietsch, Philipp; Sobottka, Sebastian; Hoffmann, Katrin; Popov, Alexey A.; Hildebrandt, Pascal; Sarkar, Biprajit; Resch-Genger, Ute; Eigler, SiegfriedReversibly switching the light absorption of organic molecules by redox processes is of interest for applications in sensors, light harvesting, smart materials, and medical diagnostics. This work presents a symmetrical benzothiadiazole (BTD) derivative with a high fluorescence quantum yield in solution and in the crystalline state and shows by spectroelectrochemical analysis that reversible switching of UV absorption in the neutral state, to broadband Vis/NIR absorption in the 1st oxidized state, to sharp band Vis absorption in the 2nd oxidized state, is possible. For the one-electron oxidized species, formation of a delocalized radical is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroelectrochemistry. Furthermore, our results reveal an increasing quinoidal distortion upon the 1st and 2nd oxidation, which can be used as the leitmotif for the development of BTD based redox switches. © 2020 The Authors. - ItemCapturing Unstable Metallofullerenes(Basel : MDPI, 2024) Liu, Fupin; Popov, Alexey A.Metallofullerenes are interesting molecules with unique structures and physicochemical properties. After they are formed in the arc-discharge process, they are first buried in the carbon soot, which requires solvent extraction to fish them out, normally followed by HPLC separation. In this minireview, we summarize the main procedures developed to obtain pure metallofullerenes, including well-established extraction with conventional fullerene solvents followed by HPLC (procedure (I) as well as several methods developed for isolation and purification of unstable fullerenes insoluble in conventional fullerene solvents, including chemical modification followed by dissolution (II.1), chemical functionalization during extraction followed by HPLC (II.2), and chemical functionalization of ionic EMFs after redox-extraction followed by HPLC (procedure II.3). The main focus here is on procedure II.3, for which the current status and future perspective are discussed.
- ItemCarbon cage isomers and magnetic Dy⋯Dy interactions in Dy2O@C88 and Dy2C2@C88 metallofullerenes(Cambridge : RSC, 2022) Yang, Wei; Velkos, Georgios; Sudarkova, Svetlana; Büchner, Bernd; Avdoshenko, Stanislav M.; Liu, Fupin; Popov, Alexey A.; Chen, NingThree isomers of Dy2O@C88 and two isomers of Dy2C2@C88 were synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. Both types of clusterfullerenes feature 4-fold electron transfer to the carbon cage, thus resulting in the same carbon cage isomers identified as C1(26), Cs(32), and D2(35). The studies of Dy⋯Dy superexchange interactions in Dy2O and Dy2C2 clusters revealed that the O2− bridge favors antiferromagnetic coupling whereas the acetylide group C22− supports ferromagnetic coupling of Dy magnetic moments. The strength of the coupling showed a considerable variability in different cage isomers. All metallofullerenes exhibited slow relaxation of magnetization and magnetic hysteresis. In Dy2O@C88 isomers the hysteresis remained open up to 7-9 K, while in Dy2C2@C88 the hysteresis loops were closed already at 2.5 K. This study demonstrated that both the endohedral bridge between metal atoms and the fullerene cage play an important role in magnetic interactions and relaxation of magnetization.
- ItemCorrelation of Work Function and Conformation of C80 Endofullerenes on h-BN/Ni(111)(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2024) Stania, Roland; Seitsonen, Ari Paavo; Jung, Hyunjin; Kunhardt, David; Popov, Alexey A.; Muntwiler, Matthias; Greber, ThomasChange of conformation or polarization of molecules is an expression of their functionality. If the two correlate, electric fields can change the conformation. In the case of endofullerene single-molecule magnets the conformation is linked to an electric and a magnetic dipole moment, and therefore magnetoelectric effects are envisoned. The interface system of one monolayer Sc2TbN@C80 on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on Ni(111) has been studied. The molecular layer is hexagonally close packedbut incommensurate. With photoemission the polarization and the conformation of the molecules are addressed by the work function and angular intensity distributions. Valence band photoemission (ARPES) shows a temperature-induced energy shift of the C80 molecular orbitals that is parallel to a change in work function of 0.25 eV without charging the molecules. ARPES indicates a modification in molecular conformations between 30 and 300 K. This order–disorder transition involves a polarization change in the interface and is centered at 125 K as observed with high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The temperature dependence is described with a thermodynamic model that accounts for disordering with an excitation energy of 74 meV into a high entropy ensemble. All experimental results are supported by density functional theory (DFT).
- ItemCovalency versus magnetic axiality in Nd molecular magnets: Nd-photoluminescence, strong ligand-field, and unprecedented nephelauxetic effect in fullerenes NdM2N@C80 (M = Sc, Lu, Y)(Cambridge : RSC, 2023) Yang, Wei; Rosenkranz, Marco; Velkos, Georgios; Ziegs, Frank; Dubrovin, Vasilii; Schiemenz, Sandra; Spree, Lukas; de Souza Barbosa, Matheus Felipe; Guillemard, Charles; Valvidares, Manuel; Büchner, Bernd; Liu, Fupin; Avdoshenko, Stanislav M.; Popov, Alexey A.Nd-based nitride clusterfullerenes NdM2N@C80 with rare-earth metals of different sizes (M = Sc, Y, Lu) were synthesized to elucidate the influence of the cluster composition, shape and internal strain on the structural and magnetic properties. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a very short Nd-N bond length in NdSc2N@C80. For Lu and Y analogs, the further shortening of the Nd-N bond and pyramidalization of the NdM2N cluster are predicted by DFT calculations as a result of the increased cluster size and a strain caused by the limited size of the fullerene cage. The short distance between Nd and nitride ions leads to a very large ligand-field splitting of Nd3+ of 1100-1200 cm−1, while the variation of the NdM2N cluster composition and concomitant internal strain results in the noticeable modulation of the splitting, which could be directly assessed from the well-resolved fine structure in the Nd-based photoluminescence spectra of NdM2N@C80 clusterfullerenes. Photoluminescence measurements also revealed an unprecedentedly strong nephelauxetic effect, pointing to a high degree of covalency. The latter appears detrimental to the magnetic axiality despite the strong ligand field. As a result, the ground magnetic state has considerable transversal components of the pseudospin g-tensor, and the slow magnetic relaxation of NdSc2N@C80 could be observed by AC magnetometry only in the presence of a magnetic field. A combination of the well-resolved magneto-optical states and slow relaxation of magnetization suggests that Nd clusterfullerenes can be useful building blocks for magneto-photonic quantum technologies.
- ItemA crystalline anionic complex of scandium nitride endometallofullerene: Experimental observation of single-bonded (Sc3N@Ih-C80−)2 dimers(Cambridge : Royal Society of Chemistry, 2016) Konarev, Dmitri V.; Zorina, Leokadiya V.; Khasanov, Salavat S.; Popov, Alexey A.; Otsuka, Akihiro; Yamochi, Hideki; Saito, Gunzi; Lyubovskaya, Rimma N.Reduction of scandium nitride clusterfullerene, Sc3N@Ih-C80, by sodium fluorenone ketyl in the presence of cryptand[2,2,2] allows the crystallization of the {cryptand[2,2,2](Na+)}2(Sc3N@Ih-C80−)2·2.5C6H4Cl2 (1) salt. The Sc3N@Ih-C80˙− radical anions are dimerized to form single-bonded (Sc3N@Ih-C80−)2 dimers.

- ItemExceptionally High Blocking Temperature of 17 K in a Surface-Supported Molecular Magnet(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2021) Paschke, Fabian; Birk, Tobias; Enenkel, Vivien; Liu, Fupin; Romankov, Vladyslav; Dreiser, Jan; Popov, Alexey A.; Fonin, MikhailSingle-molecule magnets (SMMs) are among the most promising building blocks for future magnetic data storage or quantum computing applications, owing to magnetic bistability and long magnetic relaxation times. The practical device integration requires realization of 2D surface assemblies of SMMs, where each magnetic unit shows magnetic relaxation being sufficiently slow at application-relevant temperatures. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that sub-monolayers of Dy2 @C80 (CH2 Ph) dimetallofullerenes prepared on graphene by electrospray deposition exhibit magnetic behavior fully comparable to that of the bulk. Magnetic hysteresis and relaxation time measurements show that the magnetic moment remains stable for 100 s at 17 K, marking the blocking temperature TB(100) , being not only in excellent agreement with that of the bulk sample but also representing by far the highest one detected for a surface-supported single-molecule magnet. The reported findings give a boost to the efforts to stabilize and address the spin degree of freedom in molecular magnets aiming at the realization of SMM-based spintronic units.
- ItemA faux hawk fullerene with PCBM-like properties(Cambridge : Royal Society of Chemistry, 2014) San, Long K.; Bukovsky, Eric V.; Larson, Bryon W.; Whitaker, James B.; Deng, S.H.M.; Kopidakis, Nikos; Rumbles, Garry; Popov, Alexey A.; Chen, Yu-Sheng; Wang, Xue-Bin; Boltalina, Olga V.; Strauss, Steven H.Reaction of C60, C6F5CF2I, and SnH(n-Bu)3 produced, among other unidentified fullerene derivatives, the two new compounds 1,9-C60(CF2C6F5)H (1) and 1,9-C60(cyclo-CF2(2-C6F4)) (2). The highest isolated yield of 1 was 35% based on C60. Depending on the reaction conditions, the relative amounts of 1 and 2 generated in situ were as high as 85% and 71%, respectively, based on HPLC peak integration and summing over all fullerene species present other than unreacted C60. Compound 1 is thermally stable in 1,2-dichlorobenzene (oDCB) at 160 °C but was rapidly converted to 2 upon addition of Sn2(n-Bu)6 at this temperature. In contrast, complete conversion of 1 to 2 occurred within minutes, or hours, at 25 °C in 90/10 (v/v) PhCN/C6D6 by addition of stoichiometric, or sub-stoichiometric, amounts of proton sponge (PS) or cobaltocene (CoCp2). DFT calculations indicate that when 1 is deprotonated, the anion C60(CF2C6F5)− can undergo facile intramolecular SNAr annulation to form 2 with concomitant loss of F−. To our knowledge this is the first observation of a fullerene-cage carbanion acting as an SNAr nucleophile towards an aromatic C–F bond. The gas-phase electron affinity (EA) of 2 was determined to be 2.805(10) eV by low-temperature PES, higher by 0.12(1) eV than the EA of C60 and higher by 0.18(1) eV than the EA of phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). In contrast, the relative E1/2(0/−) values of 2 and C60, −0.01(1) and 0.00(1) V, respectively, are virtually the same (on this scale, and under the same conditions, the E1/2(0/−) of PCBM is −0.09 V). Time-resolved microwave conductivity charge-carrier yield × mobility values for organic photovoltaic active-layer-type blends of 2 and poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) were comparable to those for equimolar blends of PCBM and P3HT. The structure of solvent-free crystals of 2 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The number of nearest-neighbor fullerene–fullerene interactions with centroid⋯centroid (⊙⋯⊙) distances of ≤10.34 Å is significantly greater, and the average ⊙⋯⊙ distance is shorter, for 2 (10 nearest neighbors; ave. ⊙⋯⊙ distance = 10.09 Å) than for solvent-free crystals of PCBM (7 nearest neighbors; ave. ⊙⋯⊙ distance = 10.17 Å). Finally, the thermal stability of 2 was found to be far greater than that of PCBM.
- ItemFulleretic well-defined scaffolds: Donor–fullerene alignment through metal coordination and its effect on photophysics(Hoboken, NJ : Wiley, 2016) Williams, Derek E.; Dolgopolova, Ekaterina A.; Godfrey, Danielle C.; Ermolaeva, Evgeniya D.; Pellechia, Perry J.; Greytak, Andrew B.; Smith, Mark D.; Avdoshenko, Stanislav M.; Popov, Alexey A.; Shustova, Natalia B.Herein, we report the first example of a crystalline metal–donor–fullerene framework, in which control of the donor–fullerene mutual orientation was achieved through chemical bond formation, in particular, by metal coordination. The 13C cross‐polarization magic‐angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and time‐resolved fluorescence spectroscopy were performed for comprehensive structural analysis and energy‐transfer (ET) studies of the fulleretic donor–acceptor scaffold. Furthermore, in combination with photoluminescence measurements, the theoretical calculations of the spectral overlap function, Förster radius, excitation energies, and band structure were employed to elucidate the photophysical and ET processes in the prepared fulleretic material. We envision that the well‐defined fulleretic donor–acceptor materials could contribute not only to the basic science of fullerene chemistry but would also be used towards effective development of organic photovoltaics and molecular electronics.
- ItemHelical Nanographenes Containing an Azulene Unit : Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Properties(Wiley-VCH Verlag, 2019) Ma, Ji; Fu, Yubin; Dmitrieva, Evgenia; Liu, Fupin; Komber, Hartmut; Hennersdorf, Felix; Popov, Alexey A.; Weigand, Jan J.; Liu, Junzhi; Feng, XinliangThree unprecedented helical nanographenes (1, 2, and 3) containing an azulene unit are synthesized. The resultant helical structures are unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The embedded azulene unit in 2 possesses a record-high twisting degree (16.1°) as a result of the contiguous steric repulsion at the helical inner rim. Structural analysis in combination with theoretical calculations reveals that these helical nanographenes manifest a global aromatic structure, while the inner azulene unit exhibits weak antiaromatic character. Furthermore, UV/Vis-spectral measurements reveal that superhelicenes 2 and 3 possess narrow energy gaps (2: 1.88 eV; 3: 2.03 eV), as corroborated by cyclic voltammetry and supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The stable oxidized and reduced states of 2 and 3 are characterized by in-situ EPR/Vis–NIR spectroelectrochemistry. Our study provides a novel synthetic strategy for helical nanographenes containing azulene units as well as their associated structures and physical properties. © 2019 The Authors. - ItemHierarchical Corannulene‐Based Materials: Energy Transfer and Solid‐State Photophysics(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2017-3-23) Rice, Allison M.; Fellows, W. Brett; Dolgopolova, Ekaterina A.; Greytak, Andrew B.; Vannucci, Aaron K.; Smith, Mark D.; Karakalos, Stavros G.; Krause, Jeanette A.; Avdoshenko, Stanislav M.; Popov, Alexey A.; Shustova, Natalia B.We report the first example of a donor–acceptor corannulene-containing hybrid material with rapid ligand-to-ligand energy transfer (ET). Additionally, we provide the first time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) data for any corannulene-based compounds in the solid state. Comprehensive analysis of PL data in combination with theoretical calculations of donor–acceptor exciton coupling was employed to estimate ET rate and efficiency in the prepared material. The ligand-to-ligand ET rate calculated using two models is comparable with that observed in fullerene-containing materials, which are generally considered for molecular electronics development. Thus, the presented studies not only demonstrate the possibility of merging the intrinsic properties of π-bowls, specifically corannulene derivatives, with the versatility of crystalline hybrid scaffolds, but could also foreshadow the engineering of a novel class of hierarchical corannulene-based hybrid materials for optoelectronic devices.
- ItemHigh Blocking Temperature of Magnetization and Giant Coercivity in the Azafullerene Tb 2 @C 79 N with a Single-Electron Terbium–Terbium Bond(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2019) Velkos, Georgios; Krylov, Denis S.; Kirkpatrick, Kyle; Spree, Lukas; Dubrovin, Vasilii; Büchner, Bernd; Avdoshenko, Stanislav M.; Bezmelnitsyn, Valeriy; Davis, Sean; Faust, Paul; Duchamp, James; Dorn, Harry C.; Popov, Alexey A.The azafullerene Tb 2 @C 79 N is found to be a single-molecule magnet with a high 100-s blocking temperature of magnetization of 24 K and large coercivity. Tb magnetic moments with an easy-axis single-ion magnetic anisotropy are strongly coupled by the unpaired spin of the single-electron Tb−Tb bond. Relaxation of magnetization in Tb 2 @C 79 N below 15 K proceeds via quantum tunneling of magnetization with the characteristic time τ QTM =16 462±1230 s. At higher temperature, relaxation follows the Orbach mechanism with a barrier of 757±4 K, corresponding to the excited states, in which one of the Tb spins is flipped. © 2019 The Authors. - ItemMagnetic hysteresis and strong ferromagnetic coupling of sulfur-bridged Dy ions in clusterfullerene Dy2S@C82(Cambridge : RSC, 2020) Krylov, Denis; Velkos, Georgios; Chen, Chia-Hsiang; Büchner, Bernd; Kostanyan, Aram; Greber, Thomas; Avdoshenko, Stanislav M.; Popov, Alexey A.Two isomers of metallofullerene Dy2S@C82 with sulfur-bridged Dy ions exhibit broad magnetic hysteresis with sharp steps at sub-Kelvin temperature. Analysis of the level crossing events for different orientations of a magnetic field showed that even in powder samples, the hysteresis steps caused by quantum tunneling of magnetization can provide precise information on the strength of intramolecular Dy⋯Dy interactions. A comparison of different methods to determine the energy difference between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states showed that sub-Kelvin hysteresis gives the most robust and reliable values. The ground state in Dy2S@C82 has ferromagnetic coupling of Dy magnetic moments, whereas the state with antiferromagnetic coupling in Cs and C3v cage isomers is 10.7 and 5.1 cm-1 higher, respectively. The value for the Cs isomer is among the highest found in metallofullerenes and is considerably larger than that reported in non-fullerene dinuclear molecular magnets. Magnetization relaxation times measured in zero magnetic field at sub-Kelvin temperatures tend to level off near 900 and 3200 s in Cs and C3v isomers. These times correspond to the quantum tunneling relaxation mechanism, in which the whole magnetic moment of the Dy2S@C82 molecule flips at once as a single entity. © the Partner Organisations.
- ItemMagnetic Hysteresis at 10 K in Single Molecule Magnet Self‐Assembled on Gold(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2021) Chen, Chia-Hsiang; Spree, Lukas; Koutsouflakis, Emmanouil; Krylov, Denis S.; Liu, Fupin; Brandenburg, Ariane; Velkos, Georgios; Schimmel, Sebastian; Avdoshenko, Stanislav M.; Federov, Alexander; Weschke, Eugen; Choueikani, Fadi; Ohresser, Philippe; Dreiser, Jan; Büchner, Bernd; Popov, Alexey A.Tremendous progress in the development of single molecule magnets (SMMs) raises the question of their device integration. On this route, understanding the properties of low‐dimensional assemblies of SMMs, in particular in contact with electrodes, is a necessary but difficult step. Here, it is shown that fullerene SMM self‐assembled on metal substrate from solution retains magnetic hysteresis up to 10 K. Fullerene‐SMM DySc2N@C80 and Dy2ScN@C80 are derivatized to introduce a thioacetate group, which is used to graft SMMs on gold. Magnetic properties of grafted SMMs are studied by X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism and compared to the films of nonderivatized fullerenes prepared by sublimation. In self‐assembled films, the magnetic moments of the Dy ions are preferentially aligned parallel to the surface, which is different from the disordered orientation of endohedral clusters in nonfunctionalized fullerenes. Whereas chemical derivatization reduces the blocking temperature of magnetization and narrows the hysteresis of Dy2ScN@C80, for DySc2N@C80 equally broad hysteresis is observed as in the fullerene multilayer. Magnetic bistability in the DySc2N@C80 grafted on gold is sustained up to 10 K. This study demonstrates that self‐assembly of fullerene‐SMM derivatives offers a facile solution‐based procedure for the preparation of functional magnetic sub‐monolayers with excellent SMM performance.
- ItemMetallofullerene photoswitches driven by photoinduced fullerene-to-metal electron transfer(Cambridge : RSC, 2021) Zalibera, Michal; Ziegs, Frank; Schiemenz, Sandra; Dubrovin, Vasilii; Lubitz, Wolfgang; Savitsky, Anton; Deng, Shihu H.M.; Wang, Xue-Bin; Advoshenko, Stanislav M.; Popov, Alexey A.We report on the discovery and detailed exploration of the unconventional photo-switching mechanism in metallofullerenes, in which the energy of the photon absorbed by the carbon cage π-system is transformed to mechanical motion of the endohedral cluster accompanied by accumulation of spin density on the metal atoms. Comprehensive photophysical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies augmented by theoretical modelling are performed to address the phenomenon of the light-induced photo-switching and triplet state spin dynamics in a series of YxSc3−xN@C80 (x = 0–3) nitride clusterfullerenes. Variable temperature and time-resolved photoluminescence studies revealed a strong dependence of their photophysical properties on the number of Sc atoms in the cluster. All molecules in the series exhibit temperature-dependent luminescence assigned to the near-infrared thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and phosphorescence. The emission wavelengths and Stokes shift increase systematically with the number of Sc atoms in the endohedral cluster, whereas the triplet state lifetime and S1–T1 gap decrease in this row. For Sc3N@C80, we also applied photoelectron spectroscopy to obtain the triplet state energy as well as the electron affinity. Spin distribution and dynamics in the triplet states are then studied by light-induced pulsed EPR and ENDOR spectroscopies. The spin–lattice relaxation times and triplet state lifetimes are determined from the temporal evolution of the electron spin echo after the laser pulse. Well resolved ENDOR spectra of triplets with a rich structure caused by the hyperfine and quadrupolar interactions with 14N, 45Sc, and 89Y nuclear spins are obtained. The systematic increase of the metal contribution to the triplet spin density from Y3N to Sc3N found in the ENDOR study points to a substantial fullerene-to-metal charge transfer in the excited state. These experimental results are rationalized with the help of ground-state and time-dependent DFT calculations, which revealed a substantial variation of the endohedral cluster position in the photoexcited states driven by the predisposition of Sc atoms to maximize their spin population.
- ItemMethane as a selectivity booster in the arc-discharge synthesis of endohedral fullerenes: Selective synthesis of the single-molecule magnet Dy2TiC@C80and Its Congener Dy2TiC2@C80(Hoboken, NJ : Wiley, 2015) Junghans, Katrin; Schlesier, Christin; Kostanyan, Aram; Samoylova, Nataliya A.; Deng, Qingming; Rosenkranz, Marco; Schiemenz, Sandra; Westerström, Rasmus; Greber, Thomas; Büchner, Bernd; Greber, Thomas; Popov, Alexey A.The use of methane as a reactive gas dramatically increases the selectivity of the arc‐discharge synthesis of M‐Ti‐carbide clusterfullerenes (M=Y, Nd, Gd, Dy, Er, Lu). Optimization of the process parameters allows the synthesis of Dy2TiC@C80‐I and its facile isolation in a single chromatographic step. A new type of cluster with an endohedral acetylide unit, M2TiC2@C80, is discovered along with the second isomer of M2TiC@C80. Dy2TiC@C80‐(I,II) and Dy2TiC2@C80‐I are shown to be single‐molecule magnets (SMM), but the presence of the second carbon atom in the cluster Dy2TiC2@C80 leads to substantially poorer SMM properties.
- ItemMononuclear clusterfullerene single‐molecule magnet containing strained fused‐pentagons stabilized by a nearly linear metal cyanide cluster(Hoboken, NJ : Wiley, 2017) Liu, Fupin; Wang, Song; Gao, Cong-Li; Deng, Qingming; Zhu, Xianjun; Kostanyan, Aram; Westerstrçm, Rasmus; Jin, Fei; Xie, Su‐Yuan; Popov, Alexey A.; Greber, Thomas; Yang, ShangfengFused‐pentagons results in an increase of local steric strain according to the isolated pentagon rule (IPR), and for all reported non‐IPR clusterfullerenes multiple (two or three) metals are required to stabilize the strained fused‐pentagons, making it difficult to access the single‐atom properties. Herein, we report the syntheses and isolations of novel non‐IPR mononuclear clusterfullerenes MNC@C76 (M=Tb, Y), in which one pair of strained fused‐pentagon is stabilized by a mononuclear cluster. The molecular structures of MNC@C76 (M=Tb, Y) were determined unambiguously by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, featuring a non‐IPR C2v(19138)‐C76 cage entrapping a nearly linear MNC cluster, which is remarkably different from the triangular MNC cluster within the reported analogous clusterfullerenes based on IPR‐obeying C82 cages. The TbNC@C76 molecule is found to be a field‐induced single‐molecule magnet (SMM).
