- ItemInterplay of Analysis and Probability in Applied Mathematics(Zürich : EMS Publ. House, 2015) König, Wolfgang; Theil, Florian; Zimmer, JohannesThis workshop brought together analysts and probabilists working on problems at some of the many interfaces of these two fields. Most of the problems discussed during the meeting have their origin in physics or chemistry. The workshop was grouped around the four themes (1) condensation in random structures, (2) disordered systems, (3) discrete-to-continuum transitions, (4) atomistic and molecular systems.
- ItemInterplay of Analysis and Probability in Physics(Zürich : EMS Publ. House, 2012) Mörters, Peter; Peletier, Mark; Zimmer, JohannesThe main purpose of this workshop was to foster interaction between researchers in the fields of analysis and probability with the aim of joining forces to understand difficult problems from physics rigorously. 52 researchers of all age groups and from many parts of Europe and overseas attended. The talks and discussions evolved around five topics on the interface between analysis and probability. The main goal of the workshop, the systematic encouragement of intense discussions between the two communities, was achieved to a high extent.

- ItemMini-Workshop: Multiscale and Variational Methods in Material Science and Quantum Theory of Solids(Zürich : EMS Publ. House, 2007) Chenchiah, Isaac; Veselic, Ivan; Zimmer, JohannesThis workshop brought together 18 scientists from three different mathematical communities: (i) random Schrödinger operators, (ii) quantum mechanics of interacting atoms, and (iii) mathematical materials science. Several underlying themes were identified and addressed: variational principles, homogenisation techniques, thermodynamic limits, spectral theory, and dynamic and stochastic aspects.
- ItemOrthogonality of fluxes in general nonlinear reaction networks(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2019) Renger, D.R.Michiel; Zimmer, JohannesWe consider the chemical reaction networks and study currents in these systems. Reviewing recent decomposition of rate functionals from large deviation theory for Markov processes, we adapt these results for reaction networks. In particular, we state a suitable generalisation of orthogonality of forces in these systems, and derive an inequality that bounds the free energy loss and Fisher information by the rate functional.
- ItemA revisited Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov model and the evolution of grain-size distributions in steel(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2016) Hömberg, Dietmar; Patacchini, Francesco Saverio; Sakamoto, Kenichi; Zimmer, JohannesThe classical Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov approach for nucleation and growth models of diffusive phase transitions is revisited and applied to model the growth of ferrite in multiphase steels. For the prediction of mechanical properties of such steels, a deeper knowledge of the grain structure is essential. To this end, a Fokker-Planck evolution law for the volume distribution of ferrite grains is developed and shown to exhibit a log-normally distributed solution. Numerical parameter studies are given and confirm expected properties qualitatively. As a preparation for future work on parameter identification, a strategy is presented for the comparison of volume distributions with area distributions experimentally gained from polished micrograph sections.
