Abstract

Due to their heat and drought resistance, pedunculate and sessile oak are good candidates for the forest composition under climate change constraints. The primary way of forest enrichment with the two oak species in question will be small space rejuvenation practices. However, oak powdery mildew compromises the possible success of such strategies. Year by year, it leads to substantial damage of proleptic shoots, the seedlings drop behind in height growth or even die back. As projected, the disease will be more severe with winter warming. This threats oak natural regeneration with failure especially when applied in the small scale practices for mixed stands. Therefore, it was the overall objective of the MetaEiche project to investigate into the evidence of powdery mildew resistant or tolerant oak trees or origins, respectively, as a prerequisite for a successful small scale forest enrichment with oak in a natural way.
