Abstract
The work packages CF10_1.2 strategically assessed the potential of green ammonia for the energy transition: CF10_1.2.1 delivered an independent, cross-sector potential analysis and comparison with alternatives (e.g. hydrogen, e-fuels), while CF10_1.2.2 developed an Excel tool for quantitative life-cycle emission assessment (2035/2045 scenarios for ammonia, LNG, natural gas) with adjustable inputs and graphical outputs to estimate GHG mitigation potentials. CF10_1.2 therefore provides decision-relevant foundations for assessing, in an evidence-based manner, the contribution of green ammonia to climate targets.
Within the framework of the CAMPFIRE implementation project and the work packages CF11.1.1 and CF11.1.2, the legal framework for the direct and multimodal transport of ammonia as well as for the technologies to be developed in the project was systematically examined. The aim was to identify legal barriers to practical implementation and to address them through recommendations for action. In this way, potential, opportunities, and needs for legal adjustments could already be highlighted at an early stage of technology development. The project thus makes an important contribution to identifying the need for adjustments in the legal framework as well as to embedding the technologies for the transport and use of green ammonia in society.
In work packages CF11.1.3, social and communicative aspects of the use of green ammonia as an energy carrier were investigated. The focus was on the Rostock region as a potential location for port infrastructure and demonstration projects. The analyses centered on acceptance, perceptions of risks and opportunities, and the impact of different communication approaches. The results were presented in the form of studies, communication materials, and an overarching communication strategy. In this way, an important contribution was made to follow-up research as well as to the societal and political implementation of the CAMPFIRE concept.
