Abstract

The 6G Platform subproject "Sustainability in Future Mobile Communication Systems" investigated how energy and resource efficiency can be embedded early in the development and standardization of future mobile networks. Fraunhofer IIS analyzed sustainability requirements, evaluated technical energy-saving approaches, and transferred the results into research, professional communication, and international standardization. The work focused on Network Energy Saving in 3GPP Releases 18 and 19 and on holistic 6G concepts that jointly address networks and user equipment. Key outcomes include contributions to technical specifications, the white paper "6G Energy Efficiency and Sustainability", participation in the NGMN roadmap for energy-efficient mobile networks, and simulation-based methods for energy-efficient signaling and cell operating states. The "Sustainability" working group connected research, industry, and standardization. The project demonstrates that sustainable 6G requires measurable targets, harmonized assessment methods, and a life-cycle perspective.
