Abstract

The Franco-German 5G-RACOM innovation project was successfully completed at the end of 2025 after approximately three years. It has provided insights that will make the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) more resilient and allow the efficient, robust and sustainable use of its frequency spectrum. As the successor to Global System for Mobile Communication-Railway (GSM-R), FRMCS will ensure high-performance, real-time train-to-ground communication based on 5G, thereby enabling railway digitalisation. The German project partners have examined hybrid FRMCS networks, where public mobile connectivity utilises the capabilities of the MP-TCP and MP-QUIC multipath protocols to complement the railway radio system. 5G-RACOM has proven the end-to-end feasibility of multipath functionality (MPF) for FRMCS in a realistic hybrid FRMCS setup. The project has been able to verify steering and switching as the primary operating capabilities and validated the aggregation and splitting. All the key FRMCS multipath use cases were exercised with a strong focus on fallback and capacity enhancement. The report summarizes the findings and results of the multipath protocol assessment from trials in a real field environment. Overall, it could be verified that multipath technology has reached an advanced level of maturity and is close to being ready for FRMCS deployments, thereby enhancing the resilience, session and connection continuity and availability of the FRMCS networks and as such improving overall operating efficiency. Cross-vendor interoperability with MP-QUIC has been achieved between the Funkwerk MPF client gateway and the Kontron MPF server gateway implementation. This was the world-wide first cross-vendor MP-QUIC setup demonstrated for FRMCS in the field.
