Abstract
The 6G-SKY project addressed the design of advanced, adaptive network architectures to reliably connect air and ground users. By integrating satellites, HAPS (High-Altitude Platform Stations), and direct air-to-ground communication (DA2GC), key application domains such as urban air mobility and rural broadband coverage were supported. In addition, innovations in radio technologies and 3D network management were advanced to meet the diverse requirements of airborne and terrestrial users. A particular highlight was the final demonstration of multipath and multi-hop connectivity over Wi-Fi mesh, 5G, and NTN connections for users in the air (e.g., UAVs/drones). Collaborative work with European organizations enabled a coherent, robust system design, rigorous technical validation, and the preparation and execution of real-time demonstrations. The results lay the foundation for the next phase of technology validation, industry-driven scaling, and contributions to standardization and regulation in the combined airspace and NTN context. In summary, 6G-SKY achieved the objectives defined in the German project proposal within the framework of the European Celtic project. Achievement of the objectives is described in a total of 16 Celtic deliverables from the European consortium. Sustainability was a key element of our reports; every 6G-SKY deliverable includes a dedicated section on sustainability. All Celtic reports are made available to the public via the project website www.6G-SKY.net.
