Abstract
The subproject of Rolls-Royce Solutions GmbH (RRS) within the joint research initiative MeOHmare had the overarching objective of developing and experimentally validating an engine concept based on renewable methanol. The primary application for this engine concept is the commercial marine sector.
Aligned with the lead application of commercial shipping, various engine concepts and subsystems were evaluated and systematically developed based on criteria such as technological maturity, complexity, system costs, and performance (both stationary and dynamic). A key factor in this context is power density, driven by the limited installation space and range requirements of the target segment. The project aimed to demonstrate a cylinder output of 125 kW while complying with IMO Tier III nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) emission limits.
Based on the mtu Series 4000 platform, a suitable engine concept for marine applications was developed and fully adapted for operation on methanol as a fuel. This primarily included modifications to the combustion system, the fuel system, the charge air system, the engine management system, and the exhaust aftertreatment for hydrocarbon emissions.
Over the course of the project, the technological readiness level (TRL) of the overall system of a high-speed marine methanol engine was advanced from TRL 3 to TRL 6. Specific requirements of the marine application were addressed within the requirements engineering process and experimentally validated.
