Abstract

Januar 2024 (NanoFF-A) in einer (partiellen) Helix-Formation durchgeführt.

The NanoFF project - Nanosatellites in Formation Flight - encompassed the development, manufacturing, and operation of two 2U CubeSats by the Technische Universität Berlin. The primary objective was to demonstrate safe and precise formation flight in low Earth orbit, including high-accuracy navigation, inter-satellite communication, and orbit control. The satellite platform is based on proven BEESAT technologies and was enhanced with a hot-water resistojet propulsion system (AQUAJET AI-X40), deployable solar panels, a multispectral Earth observation camera, and miniaturized star trackers.

The launch took place on 1 December 2023 aboard a Falcon-9 rocket. Both satellites were successfully deployed from D-Orbit’s Orbital Transfer Vehicle (ION) on 10 January 2024 (NanoFF-B) and 15 January 2024 (NanoFF-A), injected into a (partial) helix orbit configuration. Following deployment, all satellite subsystems were successfully commissioned and brought into operation. During the operational phase, thruster maneuvers were executed to halt the initial relative drift, while differential drag maneuvers were implemented for sustained formation control. Controlled close-proximity flybys were successfully performed in a collision-safe orbital configuration. In-orbit software updates were carried out, including improvements to propulsion system control, activation of the high-data-rate S-band downlink, and full commissioning and utilization of payload instruments.

The results validate the developed satellite platform and the hybrid control strategy combining propulsive and drag-based formation control. The mission establishes a solid foundation for future work, particularly in the follow-up project NanoFF Extended Operations, which aims to demonstrate relative navigation using differential GNSS and data exchange via the Inter-Satellite Link (ISL).
