Abschlussbericht des Konsortiums EmKoI4.0

Abstract

The EmKoI4.0 project (Development of Methods and Tools for the Planning, Integration, and Operation of Heterogeneous Communication Systems in Industry 4.0) aimed to develop a unified framework for communication convergence in industrial environments. Its main goal was to provide methods and tools that support the research, design, and implementation of flexible and interoperable communication solutions covering the entire lifecycle of industrial plants and products. The project placed a strong focus on 5G Advanced technologies as the foundation for fast, reliable, and secure industrial communication, while also considering complementary wired technologies. The project addressed the increasing complexity of communication infrastructures in smart factories, where a wide range of devices and systems must operate seamlessly together. By developing universal models to describe industrial applications and communication technologies, EmKoI4.0 established a common language for the digital representation of production networks. This universal modeling approach enables interoperability, transparency, and scalability across industrial ecosystems. The involvement of partners from Europe and Asia ensured that the developed solutions are internationally relevant and adaptable to different manufacturing environments, thus supporting the vision of globally interoperable Industry 4.0 systems. From a methodological perspective, EmKoI4.0 integrated digital twins and Asset Administration Shell (AAS) submodels as key enablers for managing communication networks. These models allow the representation of wireless systems, network parameters, and performance requirements in a standardized digital form. They serve as the foundation for advanced management architectures capable of dynamic reconfiguration, predictive control, and optimization of communication resources. The project developed prototypes using Python, REST APIs, and web-based tools, and validated them through laboratory tests and real-world experiments in 5G campus networks in Germany and Japan. Two industrial use cases were implemented at Demag’s Research and Business Factory Germany in Wetter (Ruhr). The first focused on crane control and autonomous vehicle coordination with strict timing constraints of 50 ms, where any delay could cause production interruptions. The second use case involved camera-based 3D monitoring for operator safety and process optimization, requiring adaptive data transmission and decentralized processing. Both use cases demonstrated the ability of the developed architectures to support real-time, reliable, and flexible communication in heterogeneous industrial environments. Beyond the technical outcomes, EmKoI4.0 contributed significantly to standardization and knowledge dissemination. The consortium partners actively participated in international committees such as 5G- ACIA, IEC 63595 (application of 5G in industry), and IEC 62657 (industrial wireless coexistence). In the long term, the project outcomes will enable the deployment of I4.0-compliant platforms for monitoring and managing heterogeneous communication networks. Thorsis Technologies plans to integrate the results into a modular platform combining software-based monitoring with hardware-assisted management and AI-based support. Similarly, Demag intends to use the developed concepts to improve the availability and safety of future crane and lifting systems, while TU Dresden and ifak will extend the research toward digital twin standardization and performance evaluation of wireless industrial systems. Overall, EmKoI4.0 provides a comprehensive foundation for interoperable, resilient, and adaptive communication systems, supporting the transition from traditional industrial networks toward intelligent, connected, and globally harmonized Industry 4.0 environments.
