Abstract
The main aim of this project was to develop more efficient numerical methods for time-dependent full-wheel simulations of multi-component turbomachinery configurations based on the compressible URANS equations. To achieve this, both new analysis and computational methods have been implemented, verified and validated. For the online analysis and convergence control of unsteady simulations Almost-Periodic-Fourier-Transforms (APFTs) have been implemented to allow the efficient computation of Fourier modes in configurations in which the dominant solution frequencies either do not have a common base frequency, or in which the common base frequency is low in comparison to the frequencies of real interest. Furthermore, the APFT module has been successfully integrated into time-accurate, nonreflecting boundary conditions formulated in the frequency-domain. In combination with an appropriate algorithm to detect the dominant frequencies this now allows the boundary conditions to be applied to problems in which the dominant frequencies are not known a priori. In addition, the boundary conditions can now be efficiently applied to problems in which the dominate frequencies do not share a common base frequency.
Alongside the introduction of APFTs, the so-called zonal boundary condition and the parallel framework within which it is implemented have been redesigned and newly implemented to reduce the computational overhead of this complex boundary condition. By redesigning the communication pattern, implementing a more efficient search tree (R-Tree) and through the direct communication of multiple solution layers, the computational time of the core zonal algorithm has been reduced by a factor of almost three. In realistic applications this reduces the impact of the zonal algorithm significantly. The parallel efficiency of the algorithm was improved at low process counts.
