Abstract

Current state of science & technology: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a growing field of education. However, there is a need to catch up particularly in non-formal & informal learning. Digital learning platforms such as Moodle offer great potential, as they enable location-independent & flexible learning. Interactive content created with technologies such as H5P offer additional opportunities to impart knowledge in a sustainable way.

Rationale/objective of the study: The ‘ESD self-learning course’ project was launched to develop a free & practical learning platform for educational stakeholders who want to provide flexible and low-threshold training in the field of ESD (BNE). The aim is to create a user-friendly online platform that contains interactive learning modules & provides participants with structured further training through automated certificates.

Method: The platform is based on Moodle & uses H5P to design interactive content such as videos & quizzes. Module creators were trained to understand the technical requirements & develop the modules independently. All learning modules include a final quiz that leads to the awarding of certificates. In addition, a landing page was created to introduce & provide information about the platform.

Result: Since the launch on 1 March 2024 over 1500 users have registered. The platform is rated positively, particularly due to its user-friendliness & interactive content. The automated completion certificates encourage intensive engagement with the learning content & make the platform attractive for educational stakeholders.

Conclusion/possible applications: The project shows that digital platforms offer an effective solution for ESD continuing education in the non-formal sector. The combination of Moodle & H5P has proven successful in creating user-friendly & flexible learning modules. The platform could be expanded in the future to cover more ESD topics & reach more education stakeholders.
