Abstract

The assessment of the load-bearing capacity of existing bridges is a central task in the life cycle management of infrastructure structures. As the currently valid regulations for new structures can only be applied to existing structures to a limited extent, the recalculation guideline was introduced in Germany. Among other things, this guideline is used to determine degrees of utilization for verifications in the ultimate limit state and enable a realistic assessment of the actual load-bearing reserves of a structure. However, the creation of recalculations requires some capacity (especially personnel). Therefore, for an initial comparison of the required bridge load-bearing capacity (target load level) with the assumed or proven bridge class of a structure, the load capacity index was introduced as a characteristic value for the structural evaluation of bridges. It provides an empirical assessment of structural performance based on general structural characteristics such as year of construction, type of construction and traffic load. The aim of this report is to establish a correlation between the load capacity index and the results from level 2 recalculations of concrete bridges. For this purpose, utilization ratios from existing recalculations were systematically analyzed and compared with the load capacity indices from the SIB-Bauwerke database. In addition to the mean value, extreme values and the number of available verifications were also taken into account in order to evaluate the significance of the data. The analysis shows that, as a rule, the utilization rates also increase with increasing load capacity index, which confirms the basic assumption of the load capacity index. The special regulation for structures with coupling joints could also be validated. The evaluation makes it clear that, despite its empirical basis, the load capacity index is a suitable instrument for identifying and prioritizing structures with bearing capacity deficits. The results thus support the approach of infrastructure operators and strengthen the significance of the load capacity index as a tool for structural assessment in bridge management.
