Abstract

ATYPICAL addresses a key limitation of industrial CPQ and product configuration processes: while existing configurators reliably represent technical product logic, variant rules and pricing structures, they are less capable of processing informal, incomplete or ambiguous customer requirements. The project therefore developed and validated a hybrid approach to intelligent, collaborative and lifecycle-oriented product configuration. Its core concept combines a deterministic CPQ rule engine with an AI-supported assistance layer that interprets natural language, structures requirements semantically, generates clarification questions, prepares product recommendations and validates configuration proposals against formal product rules.

The project results include a modular system architecture for integrating AI assistance into existing CPQ systems, methods for mapping vague customer requirements to technical product characteristics, recommender and multi-criteria optimization concepts, and mechanisms for collaborative configuration involving multiple roles, views and conflict-resolution requirements. The configuration process was also extended by a feedback logic that enables customer requirements to be considered not only before purchase, but also during product use and in later reconfiguration scenarios. The validation confirmed that data quality, semantically enriched product models, structured AI outputs and server-side rule validation are critical prerequisites for industrial applicability.

ATYPICAL thus provides a robust foundation for a new generation of CPQ and smart customization solutions. Its main contribution is the systematic translation of ambiguous customer language into technically verifiable configuration decisions. This can accelerate quotation processes, reduce configuration errors, improve the fit between customer needs and product variants, and support product adaptation across the lifecycle based on actual usage contexts.
