Abstract
This report is the technical report on the working package “Fission product release from a melt pool in the lower plenum” in the research project “Analysis and external validation of the AC² model basis (AVAMO)” funded under the grant number BMUV 1501629 by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and per formed by PSS group at RUB. The aim of the project is the detailed analysis and validation of the program package AC² and the modules COCOSYS, ATHLET and ATHLET-CD contained therein for the calculation of accident-relevant in- and ex-vessel phenomena. The work carried out with AC² – ATHLET-CD focusses on the validation and further development of the code for the representation of core degradation phenomena. This report is dedicated to the modelling of fission product release from melt pools in the lower reactor plenum. Within the scope of analysing the phenomenology, the relevant phases of a core melt accident and their influence on the fission product release are examined. While the degradation of the fuel rods leads to the release of volatile fission products in the early phase, a melt pool can form in the late in-vessel accident phase, in which complex thermochemical processes can occur, and less volatile fission products can also be released. The atmospheric composition, in particular the proportion of oxidising or reducing gases, influences significantly the release of semi-volatile fission products such as molybdenum or ruthenium. A new modelling approach based on the diffusion equation is being developed to describe the fission product release under these conditions. The release process is modelled using specific assumptions as well as the calculation of vapour pressures and the use of substance data from various sources. The model takes into account convection flows in the surrounding at mosphere as well as possible interactions of the atmosphere with the fission products. Measurement data from experiments in the “Late Phase Source Term Phenomena” and “EVAN” projects were used to validate the model. The calculations of the experiments show overall consistent and predominantly improved results compared to a release model used for comparison. As part of a possible further development of the model and by expanding the material data used, a differentiated simulation of the release of semi-volatile and low-volatility fission products under different atmospheric conditions can basically be made possible.
