The "Demonstration Project Multi-SOFC in HC-H2" was initiated to demonstrate innovative hydrogen technologies for decentralized power and heat supply and to showcase their potential for the energy transition and structural change in the Rhenish Lignite Mining Region. The specific objective was to demonstrate and analyze a stationary fuel cell system based on SOFC technology with a nominal capacity of 100 kW to supply the Hermann-Josef Hospital in Erkelenz. This system was intended to feed electricity into the grid and utilize heat for the heating network, which was a novelty in this size and configuration. Furthermore, the functional proof of mixed operation of natural gas with hydrogen admixture in a real-world environment was to be provided, setting the course for a later use of LOHC technology for hydrogen supply. Key Results and Achievements: - SOFC System Operation: A 100 kW SOFC fuel cell system was successfully planned, built, and operated for an extended period in scientific test mode at Erkelenz Hospital. - Long-term Stability and Reliability: The system demonstrated over 14,000 hours of operation in natural gas mode, proving its functionality, control stability, and reliability under real conditions of critical infrastructure. - Electrical Efficiency: With a prototype system an electrical efficiency of approximately 55% in natural gas operation and about 53% in 20% H2/natural gas mixed mode was demonstrated, representing a significant improvement over the existing gas engine (approx. 36%). The overall efficiency exceeded 70%. - Hydrogen Mixed Operation: The successful four-month test of hydrogen/natural gas mixed operation with 10 vol.-% H2 admixture highlights the fuel flexibility of SOFC technology. It was shown that the system robustly reacts to changes in gas quality. - LOHC Coupling Concepts: Scientifically sound concepts for the thermal coupling of an SOFC system with an LOHC dehydrogenation system were developed. These show how self-sufficient power generation from LOHC-stored hydrogen can be realized by adapting the SOFC's heat management.eng
