Abstract

The project served as the central hub of the e:Med research and funding initiative - Measures to Establish Systems Medicine in Germany. The e:Med Management Office supported the e:Med Steering Committee (Project Committee, PK) as the operational coordinating body in the areas of conceptualization and communication, internal and external networking, as well as dedicated public relations and event organization for this modular, Germany-wide program. It served as the central interface between the PK, the approximately two hundred e:Med projects, the cross-topic project groups (PG), and other relevant stakeholders. It acted on behalf of the PK and in the interest of the researchers in e:Med. It made a decisive contribution to steadily advancing the establishment of systems medicine in Germany and increasing its visibility. Among the e:Med Management Office`s successes are the organization and execution of three annual conferences with 170–230 participants, workshops, satellite symposia, 33 online seminars titled "Modeling Approaches for Disease Processes," and the 15 PK meetings (FRA Airport hybrid or online), documenting the achievements of e:Med research in a publication pipeline with 2,544 entries, extensive public relations work, and external communications, including the bilingual website https://www.sys-med.de comprising 2,200 pages. Major projects such as the publication of a 50-page, easy-to-understand informational brochure on e:Med research and background on personalized medicine, the successful hosting of the "EXPLORE Precision Medicine" 2023 event at Futurium Berlin, and the organization and execution of "SciNetPro2025" to facilitate the networking of project management for complex medical research networks at the DKFZ in Heidelberg were recognized as successful. The project has already demonstrated added value for the German research landscape by transferring expertise to organizations such as the German Centers for Health Research and through initiatives of the Helmholtz Association. This project is already concrete evidence of successful implementation, as the structure of the NGFN Management Office was successfully adapted to the requirements of the e:Med Systems Medicine concept and was updated in terms of both structure and content within the framework of this project for this e:Med funding phase.
