Abstract
- Current State of Science and Technology: While automated driving functions for well-structured traffic environments like highways are already in series production, inner-city traffic continues to represent one of the greatest challenges for automated driving.
- Rationale/Objective of the Investigation: The goal of the STADT:up collaborative research project was to develop a prototype for continuously automated driving in urban traffic, in order to permanently relieve drivers of the driving task. To this end, the project investigated state-of-the-art AI methods and data-driven development approaches, as well as cutting-edge interaction concepts for automated driving in the city. Building on this foundation, the project developed tangible driving functions that were tested and demonstrated in challenging inner-city traffic scenarios. Within STADT:up, Bosch participated in the subprojects "Human Factors" (TP2), "Environment and Context" (TP3), "Situation Analysis and Planning" (TP4), and "Automated Driving" (TP5).
- Approach: The scope of Bosch's research activities in STADT:up included: • Development of a method for the situation-specific evaluation of visual driver engagement by integrating driver monitoring with vehicle data and contextual information. Implementation in a vehicle demonstrator • Development of AI-based methods for video-based 360° perception, bird's-eye-view-based representation of the vehicle environment, and multimodal fusion of camera and radar data • Development of an AI-based behavior planner for highly interactive urban traffic scenarios. Integration into a hybrid architecture that ensures safe and rule-compliant driving behavior through model-based constraints • Development and testing of a functional prototype for continuous automated driving in the city
- Results: • A method for the situation-specific evaluation of visual driver engagement, implemented in a demonstrator • An AI model for environment perception of urban traffic environments and the fusion of different sensor modalities • A hybrid behavior planner that enables both safe and high-performance behavior planning for complex, highly interactive urban scenarios • The prototypical implementation of a driving function for continuous automated driving in the city, which was successfully tested and evaluated on an inner-city reference route
- Conclusions/Possible Applications: The results of this joint research project form an essential foundation for the realization and successful market launch of SAE Level 2 automated driving functions for urban traffic
