- ItemConductive Self-Assembled Monolayers of Paramagnetic {CoIICo4III} and {Co4IICo2III} Coordination Clusters on Gold Surfaces(Lausanne : Frontiers Media, 2019) Schmitz, Sebastian; Qiu, Xinkai; Glöß, Maria; van Leusen, Jan; Izarova, Natalya V.; Nadeem, Muhammad Arif; Griebel, Jan; Chiechi, Ryan C.; Kögerler, Paul; Monakhov, Kirill Yu.Two polynuclear cobalt(II,III) complexes, [Co5(N3)4(N-n-bda)4(bza·SMe)2] (1) and [Co6(N3)4(N-n-bda)2(bza·SMe)5(MeOH)4]Cl (2), where Hbza·SMe = 4-(methylthio)benzoic acid and N-n-H2bda = N-n-butyldiethanolamine, were synthesized and fully characterized by various techniques. Compound 1 exhibits an unusual, approximately C2-symmetric {CoII Co4II } core of two isosceles Co3 triangles with perpendicularly oriented planes, sharing a central, high-spin CoII ion residing in a distorted tetrahedral coordination environment. This central CoII ion is connected to four outer, octahedrally coordinated low-spin CoIII ions via oxo bridges. Compound 2 comprises a semi-circular {Co4IICo2III } motif of four non-interacting high-spin CoII and two low-spin CoIII centers in octahedral coordination environments. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 1 and 2 were physisorbed on template-stripped gold surfaces contacted by an eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) tip. The acquired current density-voltage (I-V) data revealed that the cobalt-based SAMs are more electrically robust than those of the previously reported dinuclear {CuIILnIII} complexes with Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, or Y (Schmitz et al., 2018a). In addition, between 170 and 220°C, the neutral, mixed-valence compound 1 undergoes a redox modification, yielding a {Co5}-based coordination cluster (1-A) with five non-interacting, high-spin octahedral CoII centers as indicated by SQUID magnetometry analysis in combination with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Solvothermal treatment of 1 results in a high-nuclearity coordination cluster, [Co10(N3)2(N-n-bda)6(bza·SMe)6] (3), containing 10 virtually non-interacting high-spin CoII centers. © Copyright © 2019 Schmitz, Qiu, Glöß, van Leusen, Izarova, Nadeem, Griebel, Chiechi, Kögerler and Monakhov.
- ItemCoordination chemistry and photoswitching of dinuclear macrocyclic cadmium-, nickel-, and zinc complexes containing azobenzene carboxylato co-ligands(Frankfurt, Main : Beilstein-Institut zur Förderung der Chemischen Wissenschaften, 2019) Klose, Jennifer; Severin, Tobias; Hahn, Peter; Jeremies, Alexander; Bergmann, Jens; Fuhrmann, Daniel; Griebel, Jan; Abel, Bernd; Kersting, BertholdThe synthesis of mixed-ligand complexes of the type [M2L(μ-L')]+, where L represents a 24-membered macrocyclic hexaaza-dithiophenolate ligand, L' is an azobenzene carboxylate co-ligand, and M = Cd(II), Ni(II) or Zn(II), is reported. A series of new complexes were synthesized, namely [M2L(μ-L')]+ (L' = azo-H, M = Cd (1), Ni (2); L' = azo-OH, M = Zn (3), Ni (4); L' = azo-NMe2, M = Zn (5), Cd (6), Ni (7); L' = azo-CO2Me, M = Cd (8), Ni (9)), and characterized by elemental analysis, electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS), IR, UV–vis and NMR spectroscopy (for diamagnetic Zn and Cd complexes) and X-ray single crystal structure analysis. The crystal structures of 3' and 5–8 display an isostructural series of compounds with bridging azobenzene carboxylates in the trans form. The paramagnetic Ni complexes 2, 4 and 7 reveal a weak ferromagnetic exchange interaction with magnetic exchange coupling constant values between 21 and 23 cm−1 (H = −2JS1S2). Irradiation of 1 with λ = 365 nm reveals a photoisomerization of the co-ligand from the trans to the cis form. © 2019 Klose et al.
- ItemEffect of morphology on the photoelectrochemical activity of TiO2 self-organized nanotube arrays(Basel : MDPI, 2020) Ennaceri, Houda; Fischer, Kristina; Hanus, Kevin; Chemseddine, Abdelkrim; Prager, Andrea; Griebel, Jan; Kühnert, Mathias; Schulze, Agnes; Abel, BerndIn the present work, highly ordered titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotube anodes were grown using a rapid anodization process. The photoelectrochemical performances of these electrodes strongly depend on the anodization conditions. Parameters such as electrolyte composition, anodization potential and anodization time are shown to affect the geometrical parameters of TiO2 nanotubes. The optimal anodization parameters are determined by photocurrent measurements, linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The thickness of the tube wall and its homogeneity is shown to strongly depend on the anodization potential, and the formation mechanism is discussed. This study permits the optimization of the photocurrent density and contributes to further improvement of the photoelectrochemical water-splitting performance of TiO2 nanotube photoelectrodes. © 2020 by the authors. - ItemEfficient synthesis of triarylamine-based dyes for p-type dye-sensitized solar cells(London : Nature Publishing Group, 2016) Wild, Martin; Griebel, Jan; Hajduk, Anna; Friedrich, Dirk; Stark, Annegret; Abel, Bernd; Siefermann, Katrin R.The class of triarylamine-based dyes has proven great potential as efficient light absorbers in inverse (p-type) dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). However, detailed investigation and further improvement of p-type DSSCs is strongly hindered by the fact that available synthesis routes of triarylamine-based dyes are inefficient and particularly demanding with regard to time and costs. Here, we report on an efficient synthesis strategy for triarylamine-based dyes for p-type DSSCs. A protocol for the synthesis of the dye-precursor (4-(bis(4-bromophenyl)amino)benzoic acid) is presented along with its X-ray crystal structure. The dye precursor is obtained from the commercially available 4(diphenylamino)benzaldehyde in a yield of 87% and serves as a starting point for the synthesis of various triarylamine-based dyes. Starting from the precursor we further describe a synthesis protocol for the dye 4-{bis[4′-(2,2-dicyanovinyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl]amino}benzoic acid (also known as dye P4) in a yield of 74%. All synthesis steps are characterized by high yields and high purities without the need for laborious purification steps and thus fulfill essential requirements for scale-up.
- ItemEnhanced removal and toxicity decline of diclofenac by combining UVA treatment and adsorption of photoproducts to polyvinylidene difluoride(Basel : MDPI, 2020) Fischer, Kristina; Sydow, Stephan; Griebel, Jan; Naumov, Sergej; Elsner, Christian; Thomas, Isabell; Latif, Amira Abdul; Schulze, AgnesThe occurrence of micropollutants in the environment is an emerging issue. Diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is one of the most frequently detected pharmaceuticals in the environment worldwide. Diclofenac is transformed by UVA light into different products with higher toxicity. The absorbance of the transformation products overlaps with the absorbance of diclofenac itself and inhibits the ongoing photoreaction. By adding polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), the products adsorb to the surface of PVDF. Therefore, phototransformation of diclofenac and total organic carbon (TOC) removal is enhanced and the toxicity decreased. At 15 min and 18 h of UVA treatment, removal of diclofenac and TOC increases from 56% to 65% and 18% to 54%, respectively, when PVDF is present. The toxicity of a UVA treated (18 h) diclofenac solution doubles (from 5 to 10, expressed in toxicity units, TU), while no toxicity was detectable when PVDF is present during UVA treatment (TU = 0). PVDF does not need to be irradiated itself but must be present during photoreaction. The adsorbent can be reused by washing with water or ethanol. Diclofenac (25 mg L−1) UVA light irradiation was monitored with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV-Vis spectroscopy and by analysing the decrease of TOC. The toxicity towards Vibrio fischeri was examined according to DIN EN ISO 11348-1: 2009-05. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to simulate the phototransformation products known in literature as well as further products identified via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The absorption spectra, reaction enthalpies (ΔH) and Gibbs free energy of reactions (ΔG) were calculated. The combination of UVA irradiation of diclofenac with adsorption of photoproducts to PVDF is unique and opens up new possibilities to enhance removal of pollutants from water.
- ItemHeterobimetallic conducting polymers based on salophen complexes via electrosynthesis(London [u.a.] : RSC, 2023) Bia, Francesca; Gualandi, Isacco; Griebel, Jan; Rasmussen, Leon; Hallak, Bassam; Tonelli, Domenica; Kersting, BertholdIn this work, we report the first electrochemical synthesis of two copolymeric bimetallic conducting polymers by a simple anodic electropolymerization method. The adopted precursors are electroactive transition metal (M = Ni, Cu and Fe) salophen complexes, which can be easily obtained by direct chemical synthesis. The resulting films, labeled poly-NiCu and poly-CuFe, were characterized by cyclic voltammetry in both organic and aqueous media, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and coupled energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The films are conductive and exhibit great electrochemical stability in both organic and aqueous media (resistant over 100 cycles without significant loss in current response or changes in electrochemical behavior), which makes them good candidates for an array of potential applications. Electrochemical detection of ascorbic acid was performed using both materials.
- ItemNovel Metabolic Signatures of Prostate Cancer Revealed by 1H-NMR Metabolomics of Urine(Basel : MDPI, 2021-1-20) Yang, Bo; Zhang, Chuan; Cheng, Sheng; Li, Gonghui; Griebel, Jan; Neuhaus, JochenProstate cancer (PC) is one of the most common male cancers worldwide. Until now, there is no consensus about using urinary metabolomic profiling as novel biomarkers to identify PC. In this study, urine samples from 50 PC patients and 50 non-cancerous individuals (control group) were collected. Based on 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) analysis, 20 metabolites were identified. Subsequently, principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares-differential analysis (PLS-DA) and ortho-PLS-DA (OPLS-DA) were applied to find metabolites to distinguish PC from the control group. Furthermore, Wilcoxon test was used to find significant differences between the two groups in metabolite urine levels. Guanidinoacetate, phenylacetylglycine, and glycine were significantly increased in PC, while L-lactate and L-alanine were significantly decreased. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis revealed that the combination of guanidinoacetate, phenylacetylglycine, and glycine was able to accurately differentiate 77% of the PC patients with sensitivity = 80% and a specificity = 64%. In addition, those three metabolites showed significant differences in patients stratified for Gleason score 6 and Gleason score ≥7, indicating potential use to detect significant prostate cancer. Pathway enrichment analysis using the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) and the SMPDB (The Small Molecule Pathway Database) revealed potential involvement of KEGG “Glycine, Serine, and Threonine metabolism” in PC. The present study highlights that guanidinoacetate, phenylacetylglycine, and glycine are potential candidate biomarkers of PC. To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first study identifying guanidinoacetate, and phenylacetylglycine as potential novel biomarkers in PC.
- ItemPhase and grain size engineering in Ge-Sb-Te-O by alloying with La-Sr-Mn-O towards improved material properties(Oxford : Elsevier Science, 2020) Kraft, Nikolas; Wang, Guoxiang; Bryja, Hagen; Prager, Andrea; Griebel, Jan; Lotnyk, AndriyGe-Sb-Te alloys are promising materials for non-volatile memory applications. Alloying of the materials with various elements is considered as prospective approach to enhance material properties. This work reports on the preparation and characterization of pure Ge-Sb-Te-O (GSTO) and alloyed with La-Sr-Mn-O (LSMO) thin films. Thermal heating of amorphous thin films to different temperatures show distinct crystallization behavior. A general trend is the decrease in the size of GSTO crystallites and the suppression in the formation of stable trigonal GSTO phase with increasing content of LSMO. Microstructural studies by transmission electron microscopy show the formation of metastable GSTO nanocrystallites dispersed in the amorphous matrix. Analysis of local chemical bonding by X-ray spectroscopy reveal the presence of different oxides in the GSTO-LSMO composites. Moreover, the composites with a high LSMO content exhibit higher crystallization temperature and significant larger sheet resistance in amorphous and crystalline phase, while a memory device made of GSTO-LSMO alloy reveals bipolar switching and synaptic behavior. In addition, the amount of LSMO in GSTO-LSMO thin films influences their optical properties and band gap. Overall, the results of this work reveal the highly promising potential of GSTO-LSMO nanocomposites for data storage and reconfigurable photonic applications as well as neuro-inspired computing.
- ItemRadiation-Induced Graft Immobilization (RIGI): Covalent Binding of Non-Vinyl Compounds on Polymer Membranes(Basel : MDPI, 2021) Schmidt, Martin; Zahn, Stefan; Gehlhaar, Florian; Prager, Andrea; Griebel, Jan; Kahnt, Axel; Knolle, Wolfgang; Konieczny, Robert; Gläser, Roger; Schulze, AgnesRadiation-induced graft immobilization (RIGI) is a novel method for the covalent binding of substances on polymeric materials without the use of additional chemicals. In contrast to the well-known radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP), RIGI can use non-vinyl compounds such as small and large functional molecules, hydrophilic polymers, or even enzymes. In a one-step electron-beam-based process, immobilization can be performed in a clean, fast, and continuous operation mode, as required for industrial applications. This study proposes a reaction mechanism using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and two small model molecules, glycine and taurine, in aqueous solution. Covalent coupling of single molecules is achieved by radical recombination and alkene addition reactions, with water radiolysis playing a crucial role in the formation of reactive solute species. Hydroxyl radicals contribute mainly to the immobilization, while solvated electrons and hydrogen radicals play a minor role. Release of fluoride is mainly induced by direct ionization of the polymer and supported by water. Hydrophobic chains attached to cations appear to enhance the covalent attachment of solutes to the polymer surface. Computational work is complemented by experimental studies, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fluoride high-performance ion chromatography (HPIC).
- ItemRole of Reaction Intermediate Diffusion on the Performance of Platinum Electrodes in Solid Acid Fuel Cells(Basel : MDPI, 2021) Lorenz, Oliver; Kühne, Alexander; Rudolph, Martin; Diyatmika, Wahyu; Prager, Andrea; Gerlach, Jürgen W.; Griebel, Jan; Winkler, Sara; Lotnyk, Andriy; Anders, André; Abel, BerndUnderstanding the reaction pathways for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key to design electrodes for solid acid fuel cells (SAFCs). In general, electrochemical reactions of a fuel cell are considered to occur at the triple-phase boundary where an electrocatalyst, electrolyte and gas phase are in contact. In this concept, diffusion processes of reaction intermediates from the catalyst to the electrolyte remain unconsidered. Here, we unravel the reaction pathways for open-structured Pt electrodes with various electrode thicknesses from 15 to 240 nm. These electrodes are characterized by a triple-phase boundary length and a thickness-depending double-phase boundary area. We reveal that the double-phase boundary is the active catalytic interface for the HOR. For Pt layers ≤ 60 nm, the HOR rate is rate-limited by the processes at the gas/catalyst and/or the catalyst/electrolyte interface while the hydrogen surface diffusion step is fast. For thicker layers (>60 nm), the diffusion of reaction intermediates on the surface of Pt be-comes the limiting process. For the ORR, the predominant reaction pathway is via the triple-phase boundary. The double-phase boundary contributes additionally with a diffusion length of a few nanometers. Based on our results, we propose that the molecular reaction mechanism at the electrode interfaces based upon the triple-phase boundary concept may need to be extended to an effective area near the triple-phase boundary length to include all catalytically relevant diffusion processes of the reaction intermediates. © 2021 by the authors. - ItemSynthesis of High Crystalline TiO2 Nanoparticles on a Polymer Membrane to Degrade Pollutants from Water(Basel : MDPI, 2018-9-5) Fischer, Kristina; Schulz, Paulina; Atanasov, Igor; Abdul Latif, Amira; Thomas, Isabell; Kühnert, Mathias; Prager, Andrea; Griebel, Jan; Schulze, AgnesTitanium dioxide (TiO2) is described as an established material to remove pollutants from water. However, TiO2 is still not applied on a large scale due to issues concerning, for example, the form of use or low photocatalytic activity. We present an easily upscalable method to synthesize high active TiO2 nanoparticles on a polyethersulfone microfiltration membrane to remove pollutants in a continuous way. For this purpose, titanium(IV) isopropoxide was mixed with water and hydrochloric acid and treated up to 210 °C. After cooling, the membrane was simply dip-coated into the TiO2 nanoparticle dispersion. Standard characterization was undertaken (i.e., X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water permeance, contact angle). Degradation of carbamazepine and methylene blue was executed. By increasing synthesis temperature crystallinity and photocatalytic activity elevates. Both ultrasound modification of nanoparticles and membrane pre-modification with carboxyl groups led to fine distribution of nanoparticles. The ultrasound-treated nanoparticles gave the highest photocatalytic activity in degrading carbamazepine and showed no decrease in degradation after nine times of repetition. The TiO2 nanoparticles were strongly bound to the membrane. Photocatalytic TiO2 nanoparticles with high activity were synthesized. The innovative method enables a fast and easy nanoparticle production, which could enable the use in large-scale water cleaning.
