Bibliometric Topic Analysis: Assisting Researchers in Identifying Research Trends and More
(Reutlingen : Berufsverband Information Bibliothek e. V., 2024) Lu, Linna
Although academic libraries offer various research-related services, bibliometrics and bibliometric analyses are not as widely used as other services. Current services tend to focus on bibliometrics as a research evaluation tool, although bibliometrics has the potential to offer much more. In today's fast-paced world of scientific publishing, researchers need to be able to quickly and efficiently navigate through vast amounts of information to identify emerging trends and gain research-relevant insights. Bibliometric topic analysis is a powerful complementary method that can help researchers meet this challenge. In this contribution, the methods, concepts, and tools of bibliometric topic analysis are presented and exemplary analyses of selected topic areas are carried out. The results of the analyses are illustrated with visualizations, thereby revealing the complex thematic landscapes, hidden patterns, and future research paths. Through this type of analysis, researchers can gain timely insights into research trends and identify potential cooperation partners, gaining numerous advantages for their research endeavors. Our library offers advisory services on bibliometric topic analysis, with the aim of integrating it into topic-specific research training, thereby significantly extending traditional research methods. We are aware of the potential challenges and limitations of this approach and emphasize responsible use of the associated methods, resources, and implications. The aim is to promote scientific research through the conscientious use of bibliometrics tailored to the specific needs of researchers.
