Since the opening of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in October 2002, the library has become one of the most important places for learning and research in the Middle East. Signs for the success are the number of media units (appr. 800.000), patrons (appr. 15.000), staff (appr. 2.000), training programmes (about 800 per year) and the quality of international conferences. Despite the high standard of architecture and technical equipment, in this paper problems of the aquisition unit, the standard of eaducation and the information policy in Egypt are discussed.

Der Begriff Bibliothek 2.0 (bzw. Library 2.0) lehnt sich an die Begrifflichkeit des Web 2.0 an. Beide Begriffe sind für die bibliothekarische Welt relativ neu und werden bisher hauptsächlich im angloamerikanischen Raum diskutiert. Einige Bereiche des „neuen“ Webs werden auch in Deutschland von Bibliothekaren diskutiert, so beispielsweise Weblogs und die Wikipedia. Die Betrachtung sollte hier jedoch nicht enden, sondern vielmehr als Startpunkt dienen. Über den Begriff als solchen kann man sicherlich streiten, jedoch hat er sich als tauglich erwiesen, um bestimmte Veränderungen zu beschreiben. So schreibt Michael Stephens, der den Begriff entscheidend mitprägte, im ALA TechSource Weblog: „I am so pleased with the discussion – and no matter what name you use, I love that the innovations and plans just keep rolling on.“

Following up their article „Bibliothek 2.0 – Die Zukunft der Bibliothek?“ („Library 2.0 – The future of the library?“) (2006), Patrick Danowski and Lambert Heller, responsible for the main focus of this issue, give an outline of some recently discussed library 2.0 topics, especially in respect to the professional community in germany. Some characteristic questions and problems of the development, opening and networking of library Services and information are mentioned.

The 'Berlin Declaration' was published in 2003 as a guideline to policy makers to promote the Internet as a functional instrument for a global scientific knowledge base. Because knowledge is derived from data, the principles of the 'Berlin Declaration ' should apply to data as well. Today, access to scientific data is hampered by structural deficits in the publication process. Data publication needs to offer authors an incentive to publish data through long-term repositories. Data publication also requires an adequate licence model that protects the intellectual property rights of the author while allowing further use of the data by the scientific community.

Mit jedem Verlag schließen Bibliotheken teils im Alleingang, teils als Konsortium individuelle Lizenzverträge. Die Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Bedingungen, Vertragsklauseln und Preisgestaltungen lassen den „Lizenzwald“ zu einem undurchdringlichen Dschungel werden. Das Goportis-Kompetenzzentrum Lizenzen bündelt Wissen und Erfahrungen der drei Zentralen Fachbibliotheken TIB, ZB MED und ZBW im Bereich Lizenzen, um diese dann anderen Bibliotheken zur Verfügung zu stellen. Dies geschieht in Form eines bundesweiten und fächerübergreifenden Informationsangebotes für Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare und beinhaltet die Verhandlung von Konsortialverträgen sowie vielfältige mit dem Lizenzerwerb und der Lizenzverwaltung verbundene Dienstleistungen

The problem of automatically estimating the creation date of photos has been addressed rarely in the past. In this paper, we introduce a novel dataset Date Estimation in the Wild for the task of predicting the acquisition year of images captured in the period from 1930 to 1999. In contrast to previous work, the dataset is neither restricted to color photography nor to specific visual concepts. The dataset consists of more than one million images crawled from Flickr and contains a large number of different motives. In addition, we propose two baseline approaches for regression and classification, respectively, relying on state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural networks. Experimental results demonstrate that these baselines are already superior to annotations of untrained humans.

Disziplinübergreifendes Forschungsdatenmanagement für Hochschulbibliotheken und Projekte zu vereinfachen und zu etablieren – das ist das Ziel von RADAR. Im Sommer 2016 geht mit ‚RADAR – Research Data Repository‘ ein Service an den Start, der Forschenden, Institutionen verschiedener Fachdisziplinen und Verlagen eine generische Infrastruktur für die Archivierung und Publikation von Forschungsdaten anbietet. Zu den Dienstleistungen gehören u. a. die Langzeitverfügbarkeit der Daten mit Handle oder Digital Object Identifier (DOI), ein anpassbares Rollen- und Zugriffsrechtemanagement, eine optionale Peer-Review-Funktion und Zugriffsstatistiken. Das Geschäftsmodell ermutigt Forschende, die anfallenden Nutzungsgebühren des Repositoriums in Drittmittelanträge und Datenmanagementpläne zu integrieren. Publizierte Daten stehen als Open Data zur Nachnutzung wie etwa Data Mining, Metadaten-Harvesting und Verknüpfung mit Suchportalen zur Verfügung. Diese Vernetzung ermöglicht ein nachhaltiges Forschungsdatenmanagement und die Etablierung von Dateninfrastrukturen wie RADAR.

Science is global, it needs global standards, global workflows and is a cooperation of global players. But science is carried out locally by local scientists that are part of local infrastructures with local funders. DataCite is an international consortium, founded in 2009 of currently 17 institutions from 12 countries worldwide. Its mission is to allow a better re-use and citation of data sets. Over 1 million datasets have been registered with a DOI name as a persistent identifier, so they can be published as independent scientific objects to allow stabile citation of data. Citable data sets can be crosslinked from journal articles, their usage and citations can be measured therefore helping scientists gain credit for making their data available. DataCite offers a central metadata repository with additional linked data service for persistent access to RDF metadata.
