Temporal Role Annotation for Named Entities

Natural language understanding tasks are key to extracting structured and semantic information from text. One of the most challenging problems in natural language is ambiguity and resolving such ambiguity based on context including temporal information. This paper, focuses on the task of extracting temporal roles from text, e.g. CEO of an organization or head of a state. A temporal role has a domain, which may resolve to different entities depending on the context and especially on temporal information, e.g. CEO of Microsoft in 2000. We focus on the temporal role extraction, as a precursor for temporal role disambiguation. We propose a structured prediction approach based on Conditional Random Fields (CRF) to annotate temporal roles in text and rely on a rich feature set, which extracts syntactic and semantic information from text. We perform an extensive evaluation of our approach based on two datasets. In the first dataset, we extract nearly 400k instances from Wikipedia through distant supervision, whereas in the second dataset, a manually curated ground-truth consisting of 200 instances is extracted from a sample of The New York Times (NYT) articles. Last, the proposed approach is compared against baselines where significant improvements are shown for both datasets.

Process Monitoring of a Vibration Dampening CFRP Drill Tube in BTA deep hole drilling using Fibre-Bragg-Grating Sensors

The large tool length in BTA deep hole drilling often leads to strong torsional vibrations of the tool system, leading to a reduced bore hole quality failures. When substituting steel drill tubes with tubes from composite material, the laminate structure dampens these vibrations. Secondly, the integration of sensors allow to monitor process vibrations. This contribution introduces a new sensor platform to measure process vibrations, feed force and drilling torque using Fibre-Bragg Grating Sensors. The presented experimental results focus on characteristic frequency spectra with natural torsional and compression frequencies of the CFRP drill tube, which show variations due to changed feed.

Generalized Regular Quadrilateral Mesh Generation based on Surface Foliation

This work introduces a novel algorithm for quad-mesh generation based on surface foliation theory. The algorithm is based on the equivalence among colorable quad-meshes, measure foliations and holomorphic differentials. The holomorphic differentials can be obtained by graph-valued harmonic maps. The algorithm has several merits: it can be applied for surfaces with general topologies; the resulting quad-meshes have global tensor product structure and the least number of singularities; the algorithmic pipeline is fully automatic. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of the proposed method.

Secondary electron yield engineering of copper surfaces by 532 nm ultrashort laser pulses

Nanostructured surfaces exhibit outstanding properties and enable manifold industrial applications. In this study the laser surface processing of polycrystalline, flat copper surfaces by 532 nm picosecond laser irradiation for secondary electron yield (SEY) reduction is reported. The laser beam was scanned in parallel lines across the sample surface in order to modify large surface areas. Morphology and SEY are characterized in dependence of the process parameters to derive correlations and mechanisms of the laser-based SEY engineering process. The nano- and microstructure morphology of the laser-modified surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and the secondary electron yield was measured. In general, an SEY reduction with increasing accumulated laser fluence was found. In particular, at low scanning speed (1 mm/s - 10 mm/s) and “high” laser power (~ 1 W) compact nanostructures with a very low SEY maximum of 0.7 are formed.

The Research Core Dataset (KDSF) in the Linked Data context

This paper describes our efforts to implement the Research Core Dataset (“Kerndatensatz Forschung”; KDSF) as an ontology in VIVO. KDSF is used in VIVO to record the required metadata on incoming data and to produce reports as an output. While both processes need an elaborate adaptation of the KDSF specification, this paper focusses on the adaptation of the KDSF basic data model for recording data in VIVO. In this context, the VIVO and KDSF ontologies were compared with respect to domain, syntax, structure, and granularity in order to identify correspondences and mismatches. To produce an alignment, different matching approaches have been applied. Furthermore, we made necessary modifications and extensions on KDSF classes and properties.

Advanced Electric Propulsion Diagnostic Tools at IOM

Recently, we have set up an Advanced Electric Propulsion Diagnostic (AEPD) platform [1], which allows for the in-situ measurement of a comprehensive set of thruster performance parameters. The platform utilizes a five-axis-movement system for precise positioning of the thruster with respect to the diagnostic heads. In the first setup (AEPD1) an energy-selective mass spectrometer (ESMS) and a miniaturized Faraday probe for ion beam characterization, a telemicroscope and a triangular laser head for measuring the erosion of mechanical parts, and a pyrometer for surface temperature measurements were integrated. The capabilities of the AEPD1 platform were demonstrated with two electric propulsion thrusters, a gridded ion thruster RIT 22 (Airbus Defence & Space, Germany, [13]) and a Hall effect thruster SPT 100D EM1 (EDB Fakel, Russia, [1], [4]), in two different vacuum facilities.

Modelling of a radio frequency plasma bridge neutralizer (RFPBN)

A performance model of a radio frequency plasma bridge neutralizer was developed to calculate the electrical parameters and optimize the neutralizer design. Minimization of power losses and gas consumption, and a maximization of the neutralizer lifetime and the reliability of the system are requirements of all electric propulsion concepts and strongly determine their future application. The requirements of the neutralizer depend on mission profiles.

SemSur: A Core Ontology for the Semantic Representation of Research Findings

The way how research is communicated using text publications has not changed much over the past decades. We have the vision that ultimately researchers will work on a common structured knowledge base comprising comprehensive semantic and machine-comprehensible descriptions of their research, thus making research contributions more transparent and comparable. We present the SemSur ontology for semantically capturing the information commonly found in survey and review articles. SemSur is able to represent scientific results and to publish them in a comprehensive knowledge graph, which provides an efficient overview of a research field, and to compare research findings with related works in a structured way, thus saving researchers a significant amount of time and effort. The new release of SemSur covers more domains, defines better alignment with external ontologies and rules for eliciting implicit knowledge. We discuss possible applications and present an evaluation of our approach with the retrospective, exemplary semantification of a survey. We demonstrate the utility of the SemSur ontology to answer queries about the different research contributions covered by the survey. SemSur is currently used and maintained at OpenResearch.org.

Development and Implementation of a Guideline for the Combination of Additively Manufactured Joint Assemblies with Wire Actuators made of Shape Memory Alloys

Smart Materials actuators in the form of wires made of shape memory alloys in combination with additively manufactured carrier components are used in a wide variety of prototype developments of innovative joint assemblies. This combination is relevant because of the same manufacturing costs of the additively manufactured components, which are independent of the quantity of parts, the free geometric design possibilities as well as the huge energy density of the aforementioned actuator technology. In particular, the focus is on the possibility of appropriately fitting large wire lengths on a compact part volume while taking into account acceptable force losses. Since there is no design guideline for such joint developments, each is individual, which results in unnecessarily long development times and a higher risk of errors. Based on selected in-house and third-party examples, integration possibilities of shape memory alloy wire actuators in additively manufactured carrier components are analysed and transferred into a universally applicable design guideline. These recommendations are brought into the framework of existing design guidelines of the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure – Association of German Engineers), namely VDI 2206 and VDI 2221 with extensions for additive manufacturing, for a better usability and integrability into existing processes. Finally, this results in a simplified access to the topic of the combination of additive manufacturing and shape memory alloys and a more efficient realisation of such joint developments.

On Tetrahedralisations Containing Knotted and Linked Line Segments

This paper considers a set of twisted line segments in 3d such that they form a knot (a closed curve) or a link of two closed curves. Such line segments appear on the boundary of a family of 3d indecomposable polyhedra (like the Schönhardt polyhedron) whose interior cannot be tetrahedralised without additional vertices added. On the other hand, a 3d (non-convex) polyhedron whose boundary contains such line segments may still be decomposable as long as the twist is not too large. It is therefore interesting to consider the question: when there exists a tetrahedralisation contains a given set of knotted or linked line segments? In this paper, we studied a simplified question with the assumption that all vertices of the line segments are in convex position. It is straightforward to show that no tetrahedralisation of 6 vertices (the three-line-segments case) can contain a trefoil knot. Things become interesting when the number of line segments increases. Since it is necessary to create new interior edges to form a tetrahedralisation. We provided a detailed analysis for the case of a set of 4 line segments. This leads to a crucial condition on the orientation of pairs of new interior edges which determines whether this set is decomposable or not. We then prove a new theorem about the decomposability for a set of n (n ≥ 3) knotted or linked line segments. This theorem implies that the family of polyhedra generalised from the Schonhardt polyhedron by Rambau [1] are all indecomposable.
