The stability of ligands and catalysts is an almost neglected issue in homogeneous catalysis, but it is crucial for successful application of this methodology in technical scale. We have studied the effect of water on phosphites, which are the most applied cocatalysts in the n-regioselective homogeneous Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins. The stability of the bidentate nonsymmetrical diphosphite L1, as well as its two monophosphite constituents L2 and L3, toward hydrolysis was investigated by means of in situ NMR spectroscopy under similar conditions as applied in industry. Hydrolysis pathways, intermediates, and kinetics were clarified. DFT calculations were used to support the experimentally found data. The acylphosphite unit L2, which reacts with water in an unselective manner, was proven to be much less stable than the phenolphosphite L3. The stability of the bidentate ligand L1 can be therefore mainly attributed to its phenolphosphite moiety. With an excess of water, the hydrolysis of L1 and L2 as well as their Rh-complexes is first-order with respect to the phosphite. Surprisingly, coordination to Rh significantly stabilizes the monodentate ligand L2, while in strong contrast, the bidentate ligand L1 decomposes faster in the Rh complex. NMR spectroscopy provided evidence for the existence of species from decomposition of phosphites, which can likewise coordinate as ligands to the metal. Electron-withdrawing groups in the periphery of the acylphosphite moiety decrease the stability of L1, whereas 3,5-disubstituted salicylic acid derivatives with bulky groups showed superior stability. These modifications of L1 also give rise to different catalytic performances in the n-regioselective hydroformylation of n-octenes and 2-pentene, from which the 3,5-di-t-butyl-substituted ligand offered a higher n-regioselectivity accompanied by a lowering of the reaction rate in comparison to the parent ligand L1.

On Silylated Oxonium and Sulfonium Ions and Their Interaction with Weakly Coordinating Borate Anions
(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2019) Bläsing, Kevin; Labbow, Rene; Michalik, Dirk; Reiß, Fabian; Schul, Axel; Villinger, Alexander; Walker, Svenja
Attempts have been made to prepare salts with the labile tris(trimethylsilyl)chalconium ions, [(Me3Si)3E]+ (E=O, S), by reacting [Me3Si-H-SiMe3][B(C6F5)4] and Me3Si[CB] (CB−=carborate=[CHB11H5Cl6]−, [CHB11Cl11]−) with Me3Si-E-SiMe3. In the reaction of Me3Si-O-SiMe3 with [Me3Si-H-SiMe3][B(C6F5)4], a ligand exchange was observed in the [Me3Si-H-SiMe3]+ cation leading to the surprising formation of the persilylated [(Me3Si)2(Me2(H)Si)O]+ oxonium ion in a formal [Me2(H)Si]+ instead of the desired [Me3Si]+ transfer reaction. In contrast, the expected homoleptic persilylated [(Me3Si)3S]+ ion was formed and isolated as [B(C6F5)4]− and [CB]− salt, when Me3Si-S-SiMe3 was treated with either [Me3Si-H-SiMe3][B(C6F5)4] or Me3Si[CB]. However, the addition of Me3Si[CB] to Me3Si-O-SiMe3 unexpectedly led to the release of Me4Si with simultaneous formation of a cyclic dioxonium dication of the type [Me3Si-μO-SiMe2]2[CB]2 in an anion-mediated reaction. DFT studies on structure, bonding and thermodynamics of the [(Me3Si)3E]+ and [(Me3Si)2(Me2(H)Si)E]+ ion formation are presented as well as mechanistic investigations on the template-driven transformation of the [(Me3Si)3E]+ ion into a cyclic dichalconium dication [Me3Si-μE-SiMe2]22+. © 2019 The Authors. A chemical reaction controlled by light-activated molecular switches based on heterocyclopentanediyls
(Cambridge : RSC, 2019) Bresien, Jonas; Kröger-Badge, Thomas; Lochbrunner, Stefan; Michalik, Dirk; Müller, Henrik; Schulz, Axel; Zander, Edgar
Molecular switches are molecules that can reversibly be shifted between at least two stable states with different physical and chemical properties, making them interesting for application as chemical sensors or molecular machines. We recently discovered that five-membered, cyclic biradicals based on group 15 elements are efficient and robust photochemical switches that can be activated by red light. The quantum yield of the photo-isomerization is as high as 24.6%, and the thermal equilibration of the photo-activation product proceeds rapidly at ambient temperature. The fully reversible process was studied by experimental and high-level ab initio techniques. We could further demonstrate that the biradical character could be completely turned on and off, so the system could be applied to control chemical equilibria that involve activation products of the cyclic biradicals. © 2019 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

A Comparative Study on the Thermodynamics of Halogen Bonding of Group 10 Pincer Fluoride Complexes
(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2019) Joksch, Markus; Agarwala, Hemlata; Ferro, Monica; Michalik, Dirk; Spannenberg, Anke; Beweries, Torsten
The thermodynamics of halogen bonding of a series of isostructural Group 10 metal pincer fluoride complexes of the type [(3,5-R2-tBuPOCOPtBu)MF] (3,5-R2-tBuPOCOPtBu=κ3-C6HR2-2,6-(OPtBu2)2 with R=H, tBu, COOMe; M=Ni, Pd, Pt) and iodopentafluorobenzene was investigated. Based on NMR experiments at different temperatures, all complexes 1-tBu (R=tBu, M=Ni), 2-H (R=H, M=Pd), 2-tBu (R=tBu, M=Pd), 2-COOMe (R=COOMe, M=Pd) and 3-tBu (R=tBu, M=Pt) form strong halogen bonds with Pd complexes showing significantly stronger binding to iodopentafluorobenzene. Structural and computational analysis of a model adduct of complex 2-tBu with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene as well as of structures of iodopentafluorobenzene in toluene solution shows that formation of a type I contact occurs. © 2019 The Authors. Synthesis of C2-Symmetric Diphosphormonoamidites and Their Use as Ligands in Rh-Catalyzed Hydroformylation: Relationships between Activity and Hydrolysis Stability
(Weinheim : Wiley-VCH-Verl., 2017-1-23) Morales Torres, Galina; Behrens, Stephan; Michalik, Dirk; Selent, Detlef; Spannenberg, Anke; Lühr, Susan; Dyballa, Katrin Marie; Franke, Robert; Börner, Armin
A series of diphosphoramidites has been synthetized with a piperazine, homopiperazine, and an acyclic 1,2-diamine unit in the backbone. New compounds were tested alongside related N-acyl phosphoramidites as ligands in the Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of n-octenes to investigate their influence on the activity and regioselectivity. A subsequent study of their hydrolysis stability revealed that the most stable ligands induced the highest activity in the catalytic reaction.

Deuteron quadrupole coupling constants and reorientational correlation times in protic ionic liquids
(Cambridge : RSC Publ., 2016) Strauch, Matthias; Bonsa, Anne-Marie; Golub, Benjamin; Overbeck, Viviane; Michalik, Dirk; Paschek, Dietmar; Ludwig, Ralf
We describe a method for the accurate determination of deuteron quadrupole coupling constants χD for N–D bonds in triethylammonium-based protic ionic liquids (PILs). This approach was first introduced by Wendt and Farrar for O–D bonds in molecular liquids, and is based on the linear relationship between the deuteron quadrupole coupling constants χD, and the proton chemical shifts δ1H, as obtained from DFT calculated properties in differently sized clusters of the compounds. Thus the measurement of δ1H provides an accurate estimate for χD, which can then be used for deriving reorientational correlation-times τND, by means of NMR deuteron quadrupole relaxation time measurements. The method is applied to pure PILs including differently strong interacting anions. The obtained χD values vary between 152 and 204 kHz, depending on the cation–anion interaction strength, intensified by H-bonding. We find that considering dispersion corrections in the DFT-calculations leads to only slightly decreasing χD values. The determined reorientational correlation times indicate that the extreme narrowing condition is fulfilled for these PILs. The τc values along with the measured viscosities provide an estimate for the volume/size of the clusters present in solution. In addition, the correlation times τc, and the H-bonded aggregates were also characterized by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.
