On the existence of weak solutions in the context of multidimensional incompressible fluid dynamics
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Lasarzik, Robert
We define the concept of energy-variational solutions for the Navier--Stokes and Euler equations. This concept is shown to be equivalent to weak solutions with energy conservation. Via a standard Galerkin discretization, we prove the existence of energy-variational solutions and thus weak solutions in any space dimension for the Navier--Stokes equations. In the limit of vanishing viscosity the same assertions are deduced for the incompressible Euler system. Via the selection criterion of maximal dissipation we deduce well-posedness for these equations.

A coarse-grained electrothermal model for organic semiconductor devices
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Glitzky, Annegret; Liero, Matthias; Nika, Grigor
We derive a coarse-grained model for the electrothermal interaction of organic semiconductors. The model combines stationary drift-diffusion based electrothermal models with thermistor type models on subregions of the device and suitable transmission conditions. Moreover, we prove existence of a solution using a regularization argument and Schauder's fixed point theorem. In doing so, we extend recent work by taking into account the statistical relation given by the Gauss--Fermi integral and mobility functions depending on the temperature, charge-carrier density, and field strength, which is required for a proper description of organic devices.

Analysis of a hybrid model for the electrothermal behavior of semiconductor heterostructures
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2019) Glitzky, Annegret; Liero, Matthias; Nika, Grigor
We prove existence of a weak solution for a hybrid model for the electro-thermal behavior of semiconductor heterostructures. This hybrid model combines an electro-thermal model based on drift-diffusion with thermistor type models in different subregions of the semiconductor heterostructure. The proof uses a regularization method and Schauder's fixed point theorem. For boundary data compatible with thermodynamic equilibrium we verify, additionally, uniqueness. Moreover, we derive bounds and higher integrability properties for the electrostatic potential and the quasi Fermi potentials as well as the temperature.

On nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes systems in two dimensions
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2014) Frigeri, Sergio; Gal, Cipian G.; Grasselli, Maurizio
We consider a diffuse interface model which describes the motion of an incompressible isothermal mixture of two immiscible fluids. This model consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation. Several results were already proven by two of the present authors. However, in the two-dimensional case, the uniqueness of weak solutions was still open. Here we establish such a result even in the case of degenerate mobility and singular potential. Moreover, we show the strong-weak uniqueness in the case of viscosity depending on the order parameter, provided that the mobility is constant and the potential is regular. In the case of constant viscosity, on account of the uniqueness results we can deduce the connectedness of the global attractor whose existence was obtained in a previous paper. The uniqueness technique can be adapted to show the validity of a smoothing property for the difference of two trajectories which is crucial to establish the existence of an exponential attractor.

A theory of generalised solutions for ideal gas mixtures with Maxwell--Stefan diffusion
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2020) Druet, Pierre-Étienne
After the pioneering work by Giovangigli on mathematics of multicomponent flows, several attempts were made to introduce global weak solutions for the PDEs describing the dynamics of fluid mixtures. While the incompressible case with constant density was enlighted well enough due to results by Chen and Jüngel (isothermal case), or Marion and Temam, some open questions remain for the weak solution theory of gas mixtures with their corresponding equations of mixed parabolic-hyperbolic type. For instance, Mucha, Pokorny and Zatorska showed the possibility to stabilise the hyperbolic component by means of the Bresch-Desjardins technique and a regularisation of pressure preventing vacuum. The result by Dreyer, Druet, Gajewski and Guhlke avoids emphex machina stabilisations, but the mathematical assumption that the Onsager matrix is uniformly positive on certain subspaces leads, in the dilute limit, to infinite diffusion velocities which are not compatible with the Maxwell-Stefan form of diffusion fluxes. In this paper, we prove the existence of global weak solutions for isothermal and ideal compressible mixtures with natural diffusion. The main new tool is an asymptotic condition imposed at low pressure on the binary Maxwell-Stefan diffusivities, which compensates possibly extreme behaviour of weak solutions in the rarefied regime.

Leray--Hopf solutions to a viscoelastic fluid model with nonsmooth stress-strain relation
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Eiter, Thomas; Hopf, Katharina; Mielke, Alexander
We consider a fluid model including viscoelastic and viscoplastic effects. The state is given by the fluid velocity and an internal stress tensor that is transported along the flow with the Zaremba--Jaumann derivative. Moreover, the stress tensor obeys a nonlinear and nonsmooth dissipation law as well as stress diffusion. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions satisfying an energy inequality under general Dirichlet conditions for the velocity field and Neumann conditions for the stress tensor.

A diffuse interface model for two-phase incompressible flows with nonlocal interactions and nonconstant mobility
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2014) Frigeri, Sergio; Grasselli, Maurizio; Rocca, Elisabetta
We consider a diffuse interface model for incompressible isothermal mixtures of two immiscible fluids with matched constant densities. This model consists of the Navier-Stokes system coupled with a convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with non-constant mobility. We first prove the existence of a global weak solution in the case of non-degenerate mobilities and regular potentials of polynomial growth. Then we extend the result to degenerate mobilities and singular (e.g. logarithmic) potentials. In the latter case we also establish the existence of the global attractor in dimension two. Using a similar technique, we show that there is a global attractor for the convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility and singular potential in dimension three.

(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2016) Abdellaoui, Boumediene; Dieb, Abdelrazek; Valdinoci, Enrico
The aim of this paper is to study a nonlocal equation with mixed Neumann and Dirichlet external conditions. We prove existence, nonexistence and multiplicity of positive energy solutions and analyze the interaction between the concave-convex nonlinearity and the Dirichlet-Neumann data.

A model for resistance welding including phase transitions and Joule heating
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2010) Hömberg, Dietmar; Rocca, Elisabetta
In this paper we introduce a new model for solid-liquid phase transitions triggered by Joule heating as they arise in the case of resistance welding of metal parts. The main novelties of the paper are the coupling of the thermistor problem with a phase field model and the consideration of phase dependent physical parameters through a mixture ansatz. The PDE system resulting from our modelling approach couples a strongly nonlinear heat equation, a non-smooth equation for the the phase parameter (standing for the local proportion of one of the two phases) with quasistatic electric charge conservation law. We prove existence of weak solutions in the 3D case, while the regularity result and the uniqueness of solution is stated only in the 2D case. Indeed, uniqueness for the three dimensional system is still an open problem.

Existence of weak solutions for a hyperbolic-parabolic phase field system with mixed boundary conditions on non-smooth domains
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2013) Heinemann, Christian; Kraus, Christiane
The aim of this paper is to prove existence of weak solutions of hyperbolic-parabolic evolution inclusions defined on Lipschitz domains with mixed boundary conditions describing, for instance, damage processes and elasticity with inertial effects. To this end, we first present a suitable weak formulation in order to deal with such evolution inclusions. Then, existence of weak solutions is proven by utilizing time-discretization, H2-regularization and variational techniques.
