Experimental and computational analysis of thermoelectric modules based on melt-mixed polypropylene composites
(Amsterdam : Elsevier, 2023) Doraghi, Qusay; Żabnieńska-Góra, Alina; Norman, Les; Krause, Beate; Pötschke, Petra; Jouhara, Hussam
Researchers are constantly looking for new materials that exploit the Seebeck phenomenon to convert heat into electrical energy using thermoelectric generators (TEGs). New lead-free thermoelectric materials are being investigated as part of the EU project InComEss, with one of the anticipated uses being converting wasted heat into electric energy. Such research aims to reduce the production costs as well as the environmental impact of current TEG modules which mostly employ bismuth for their construction. The use of polymers that, despite lower efficiency, achieve increasingly higher values of electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficients at a low heat transfer coefficient is increasingly discussed in the literature. This article presents two thermoelectric generator (TEG) models based on data previously described in the literature. Two types of designs are presented: consisting of 4- and 49-leg pairs of p- and n-type composites based on polypropylene melt-mixed with single-walled carbon nanotubes. The models being developed using COMSOL Multiphysics software and validated based on measurements carried out in the laboratory. Based on the results of the analysis, conductive polymer composites employing insulating matrices can be considered as a promising material of the future for TEG modules.

Catechol-chitosan/polyacrylamide hydrogel wound dressing for regulating local inflammation
(Amsterdam : Elsevier, 2022) Lu, Bingyang; Han, Xiao; Zou, Dan; Luo, Xiao; Liu, Li; Wang, Jingyue; Maitz, Manfred F.; Yang, Ping; Huang, Nan; Zhao, Ansha
Chronic wounds and the accompanying inflammation are ongoing challenges in clinical treatment. They are usually accompanied by low pH and high oxidative stress environments, limiting cell growth and proliferation. Ordinary medical gauze has limited therapeutic effects on chronic wounds, and there is active research to develop new wound dressings. The chitosan hydrogel could be widely used in biomedical science with great biocompatibility, but the low mechanical properties limit its development. This work uses polyacrylamide to prepare double-network (DN) hydrogels based on bioadhesive catechol-chitosan hydrogels. Cystamine and N, N′-Bis(acryloyl)cystamine, which can be cross-linking agents with disulfide bonds to prepare redox-responsive DN hydrogels and pH-responsive nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by acetalized cyclodextrin (ACD) are used to intelligently release drugs against chronic inflammation microenvironments. The addition of catechol groups and ACD-NPs loaded with the Resolvin E1 (RvE1), promotes cell adhesion and regulates the inflammatory response at the wound site. The preparation of the DN hydrogel in this study can be used to treat and regulate the inflammatory microenvironment of chronic wounds accurately. It provides new ideas for using inflammation resolving factor loaded in DN hydrogel of good biocompatibility with enhanced mechanical properties to intelligent regulate the wound inflammation and promote the wound repaired.

Waterborne phenolic, triazine-based porous polymer particles for the removal of toxic metal ions
(Amsterdam : Elsevier, 2022) Borchert, Konstantin B.L.; Frenzel, Robert; Gerlach, Niklas; Reis, Berthold; Steinbach, Christine; Kohn, Benjamin; Scheler, Ulrich; Schwarz, Simona; Schwarz, Dana
Highly functional and also highly porous materials are presenting great advantages for applications in energy storage, catalysis and separation processes, which is why a continuous development of new materials can be seen. To create a material combining the promising potential interactions of triazine groups with the electrostatic or hydrogen bonding interactions of phenolic groups, a completely new polymeric resin was synthesized. From an eco-friendly dispersion polymerization in water, a copolymer network was obtained, which includes nine hydroxyl groups and one s-triazine ring per repetition unit. The polymer forms highly porous particles with specific surface areas up to 531 m2/g and a negative streaming potential over a great pH range. The adsorption isotherms of Ni2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ were studied in more detail achieving very good adsorption capacities (16 mg Ni2+/g, 24 mg Cd2+/g, and 90 mg Pb2+/g). Demonstrating excellent properties for adsorption applications. The adsorbent exhibited selectivity for the adsorption of Pb2+ over more commonly occurring but non-toxic metal ions such as Fe2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+. Furthermore, reusability of the material was demonstrated by facile, quantitative desorption of adsorbed Pb2+ with a small amount of diluted HCl, circumventing organic chelators. Subsequently, adsorption was carried out without decrease in adsorption performance.

3D Quantification of Vascular-Like Structures in z Stack Confocal Images
(Amsterdam : Elsevier, 2020) Bonda, Ulrich; Jaeschke, Anna; Lighterness, Anthony; Baldwin, Jeremy; Werner, Carsten; De-Juan-Pardo, Elena M.; Bray, Laura J.
Optical slice microscopy is commonly used to characterize the morphometric features of 3D cellular cultures, such as in vitro vascularization. However, the quantitative analysis of those structures is often performed on a single 2D maximum intensity projection image, limiting the accuracy of data obtained from 3D cultures. Here, we present a protocol for the quantitative analysis of z stack images, utilizing Fiji, Amira, and WinFiber3D. This protocol facilitates the in-depth examination of vascular-like structures within 3D cell culture models.

Recent advances for flame retardant rubber composites: Mini-review
(Amsterdam : Elsevier, 2023) Lai, Liangqing; Liu, Jia; Lv, Zhen; Gao, Tianming; Luo, Yongyue
Flame retardant rubber composites have attracted a great attention during the past decades owing to their irreplaceable roles in complex industrial systems. Large amounts of efforts have been made to improve the flame retardant ability, developing high efficiency flame retardant systems which can reduce the release of heat, smoke and toxic gases while not deteriorate overall properties is becoming more and more important. This review briefly outlines the recent developments of flame retardant natural rubbers, silicon rubbers, some kinds of artificial rubbers and polyurethane elastomer composites, focuses on the design, development, mechanism and applications of advanced high-performance flame-retardant methods. Finally, outlooks the future tendency including more environmental-friendly strategies, higher flame-retardant efficiency and development of multifunctional flame-retardant rubber composites are proposed.

Intrinsic modulus and strain coefficients in dilute composites with a Neo-Hookean elastic matrix
(Amsterdam : Elsevier, 2022) Ivaneyko, Dmytro; Domurath, Jan; Heinrich, Gert; Saphiannikova, Marina
A finite element modelling of dilute elastomer composites based on a Neo-Hookean elastic matrix and rigid spherical particles embedded within the matrix was performed. In particular, the deformation field in vicinity of a sphere was simulated and numerical homogenization has been used to obtain the effective modulus of the composite μeff for different applied extension and compression ratios. At small deformations the well-known Smallwood result for the composite is reproduced: μeff=(1+[μ]φ)μ0 with the intrinsic modulus [μ]=2.500. Here φ is the volume fraction of particles and μ0 is the modulus of the matrix solid. However at larger deformations higher values of the intrinsic modulus [μ] are obtained, which increase quadratically with the applied true strain. The homogenization procedure allowed to extract the intrinsic strain coefficients which are mirrored around the undeformed state for principle extension and compression axes. Utilizing the simulation results, stress and strain modifications of the Neo-Hookean strain energy function for dilute composites are proposed.
