    Increased biocompatibility and bioactivity after energetic PVD surface treatments

    Ion implantation, a common technology in semiconductor processing, has been applied to biomaterials since the 1960s. Using energetic ion bombardment, a general term which includes conventional ion implantation plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) and ion beam assisted thin film deposition, functionalization of surfaces is possible. By varying and adjusting the process parameters, several surface properties can be attuned simultaneously. Extensive research details improvements in the biocompatibility, mainly by reducing corrosion rates and increasing wear resistance after surface modification. Recently, enhanced bioactivity strongly correlated with the surface topography and less with the surface chemistry has been reported, with an increased roughness on the nanometer scale induced by self-organisation processes during ion bombardment leading to faster cellular adhesion processes. © 2009 by the authors;.

    The major topics discussed in this workshop were Hilbert modules of analytic functions on domains in ℂn, Toeplitz and Hankel operators, the interplay of commutative algebra, complex analytic geometry and multivariable operator theory, coherent and quasi-coherent sheaves as localizations of Hilbert modules, Hilbert bundles and Jordan varieties on Cartan domains.

    Combinatorics and Probability

    The effective application of probabilistic reasoning in the study of problems in diverse areas is one of the most exciting recent developments in Mathematics. Probabilistic methods turned out to be very powerful in Discrete Mathematics, Analysis, Number Theory and Theoretical Computer Science. The meeting was dedicated to recent developments in these areas, focusing on the investigation of combinatorial problems for random sets and probabilistic methods, on the study of of questions in percolation, on the design and analysis of randomized algorithms and derandomization techniques, and on applications of probabilistic ideas in the study of questions in Combinatorial Number Theory and in Combinatorial Geometry.

    New electronic device for driving surface acoustic wave actuators

    Surface acoustic wave (SAW) actuators are driven by a high frequency signal. The frequency range for an ideal SAW-generation is usually very narrow banded and may shift depending on various environmental conditions. We present a new electronic device which self-aligns to the optimal excitation frequency within a wide range. Any kind of SAW-actuator can be used. The device continuously scans a certain frequency range and characterizes the SAW-component. The ideal excitation frequency is then determined and used to drive the SAW-device. In case of changes like loading conditions or temperature variations the device automatically readjusts to the optimal frequency and prevents possible damage of the device or actuator in case of an error. © 2009.

    The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in soils in the Region of Valasske Mezirici, the Czech Republic

    The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination of urban, agricultural and forest soil samples was investigated from samples obtained in the surroundings of Valasske Mezirici. Valasske Mezirici is a town located in the north-east mountainous part of the Czech Republic, where a coal tar refinery is situated. 16 PAHs listed in the US EPA were investigated. Organic oxidizable carbon was also observed in the forest soils. The PAH concentrations ranged from 0.86-10.84 (with one anomalous value of 35.14) and 7.66-79.39 mg/kg dm in the urban/agricultural and forest soils, respectively. While the PAH levels in the urban/agricultural soils are within the range typically found in industrialized areas, the forest soils showed elevated PAH concentrations compared to other forest soils in Western and Northern Europe. The PAH concentrations and their molecular distribution ratios were studied as functions of the sample location and the meteorological history. The soils from localities at higher altitudes above sea level have the highest PAH concentrations, and the PAH concentrations decrease with increasing distance from the town.

    Multiplier Ideal Sheaves in Algebraic and Complex Geometry

    The workshop Multiplier Ideal Sheaves in Algebraic and Complex Geometry, organised by Stefan Kebekus (Freiburg), Mihai Paun (Nancy), Georg Schumacher (Marburg) and Yum-Tong Siu (Cambridge MA) was held April 12th – April 18th, 2009. Since the previous Oberwolfach conference in 2004, there have been important new developments and results, both in the analytic and algebraic area, e.g. in the field of the extension of L2 holomorphic functions, the solution of the ACC conjecture, log-canonical rings, the Kähler–Ricci flow, Seshadri constants and the analogues of mula tiplier ideals in positive characteristic.

    Mini-Workshop: Non-Negativity is a Quantum Phenomenon

    In recent publications, the same combinatorial description has arisen for three separate objects of interest: non-negative cells in the real grassmannian (Postnikov, Williams); torus orbits of symplectic leaves in the classical grassmannian (Brown, Goodearl and Yakimov); and, torus invariant prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian (Launois, Lenagan and Rigal). The aim of this meeting was to explore the reasons for this coincidence in matrices and the grassmannian in particular, and to explore similar ideas in more general settings.

    Work on non photocatalytically active titania particles

    Titanium dioxide has photocatalytic properties, i.e. under UV irradiation it develops an oxidative potential. In photocatalysis this is very desirable, but not when nano particulate titania is embedded into organic polymer matrices in order to increase the refractive index. UV irradiation would in this case destroy the material in the long run. For deactivation in general the titania is coated by e.g. silica or alumina which leads to other undesired effects like growth of the particle size and enhanced light scattering. The current work focuses on the application of techniques for doping during synthesis of crystallization of nano particulate TiO2. The photocatalysis activity was determined by degradation experiments of 4-chlorophenol using dip coated glass plates under artificial sunlight, where decreases of the photocatalytic effect of up to 90 % were found.
