    Semantic modelling of video annotations – the TIB AV-Portal's metadata structure

    The TIB AV-Portal (https://av.tib.eu) is an online platform for sharing scientific videos operated by the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB). Besides the allocation of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) and Media Fragment Identifiers (MFID) for video citation, long-term preservation of all material and open licenses like Creative Commons, the core feature of the TIB AV-Portal are its various methods of automated metadata extraction to fundamentally improve search functionalities (e.g. fine-grained search and faceting). These comprise of an automated chaptering, extraction of superimposed text, speech to text recognition, and the detection of predefined visual concepts. In addition, extracted metadata are consequently mapped against authority files like the German “Gemeinsame Normdatei” and knowledge bases like DBpedia and Library of Congress Subject Headings via a process of automated named entity linking (NEL) to enable semantic and cross-lingual search. The results of this process are expressed as temporal and/or spatial video annotations, linking extracted metadata to certain key frames and video segments. In order to structure the data, express relations between single entities, and link to external information resources, several common vocabularies, ontologies and knowledge bases are being used. These include amongst others the Open Annotation Data Model, the NLP Interchange Format (NIF), BIBFRAME, the Friend of Friend Vocabulary (FOAF), and Schema.org. Furthermore, all data is stored adhering to the Resource Description Framework (RDF) data model and published as linked open data. This provides third parties with an interoperable and easy to reuse RDF graph representation of the AV-Portal’s metadata. On our poster we illustrate the general structure of the TIB AV-Portal’s comprehensive metadata both authoritative and extracted automatically. Here, the main focus is on the underlying video annotation graph model and on semantic interoperability and reusability of the data. In particular we visualize how the use of vocabularies, ontologies and knowledge bases allows for rich semantic descriptions of video materials as well as for easy metadata publication, interlinking, and opportunities of reuse by third parties (e.g. for information retrieval and enrichment). In doing so, we present the AV-Portal’s metadata structure as an illustrative example for the complexity of modelling temporal and spatial video metadata and as a set of best practices in the field of audio-visual resources.

    Sprints und kollaboratives Wissensmanagement im Confluence-Wiki der Technischen Informationsbibliothek

    Soziale Softwarewerkzeuge wie Wikis sind in Unternehmen und auch im Bibliotheksbereich längst etabliert. Sie unterstützen das Projekt- und Wissensmanagement der Organisation. Häufig werden die Möglichkeiten, die diese Techniken bieten, allerdings nicht voll ausgeschöpft. Dieser Beitrag zeigt anhand eines Projekts der Technischen Informationsbibliothek (TIB), wie wesentlich das Unternehmenswiki das Wissensmanagement und kollaborative Arbeiten in Projekten unterstützen kann, wenn es intensiv genutzt wird. Die TIB musste nicht erst eine teure und komplizierte Software hinzukaufen, sondern setzte auf das im Haus bereits etablierte Confluence-Wiki. Confluence ist ein Standard-Tool, das in vielen Bibliotheken verwendet wird. Das TIB-Projekt hatte zum Ziel, den Relaunch des AV-Portals (av.tib.eu) zu organisieren. Das Team integrierte in seine Projektarbeit ein Konzept aus dem agilen Produktmanagement: sog. Sprints“. Diese Sprints wurden mit einem differenzierten und rollenbasierten Prozess im Confluence-Wiki abgebildet. In dem von der TIB entwickelten Sprint-Konzept legt der Projektmanager ein Dokument im Wiki an, in dem er erste Anforderungen und Aufgaben für alle Teammitglieder festhält. Die Teammitglieder schreiben das Konzept kollaborativ auf einer Wiki-Seite und arbeiten ihre Aufgaben ab. Der Projektmanager nutzt das Wiki, um Konzeptfortschritt und Aufgabenbearbeitung zu kontrollieren. Sprints liefern am Ende Konzepte, die kollaborativ evaluiert, entwickelt und abgenommen wurden. Sie vereinfachen und beschleunigen komplexe Entscheidungsfindungen und lassen sich in zahlreichen Bereichen des Projekt- und Wissensmanagements anwenden. Der Beitrag stellt Ablauf, Rollen und Dokumente des TIB-Sprint-Workflows detailliert vor.

    Microstructure evolution during annealing of an SPD- processed supersaturated Cu – 3 at.% Ag alloy

    Supersaturated Cu-3 at.% Ag alloy was processed by rolling at liquid nitrogen temperature and subsequent annealing at 623 K up to 20 min. It was found that after annealing, an inhomogeneous solute atom distribution developed, since the Ag particles with small size and/or large specific interfacial energy were dissolved due to the Gibbs-Thomson effect. In the region where the solute concentration increased, a high dislocation density was retained in the Cu matrix even after annealing, while in the region where the Ag solute content did not increase, the dislocation density decreased by more than one order of magnitude. Therefore, in the cryorolled and annealed samples, heterogeneous microstructures were developed where both the dislocation density and the solute concentration varied considerably.

    VIVO-DE-Extension und VIVO-KDSF – Ontologien für den deutschsprachigen Raum

    Der Aufbau einer deutschsprachigen Version der Fachinformationssystem-Software VIVO ist nicht so einfach, da sich auf allen Ebenen des Systems sprachspezifische Elemente finden -- von der Anzeige bis hin zu den enthaltenen Ontologien -- und da eine direkte Übersetzung aufgrund kultureller Unterschiede in den Wissenschaftslandschaften oft nicht möglich ist. In dieser Präsentation werden die entsprechenden Aktivitäten der deutschsprachigen VIVO-Community vorgestellt und es wird zur Beteiligung aufgerufen.

    Guidelines for Open Educational Resources for Libraries and Information Institutions

    „UNESCO believes that universal access to high quality education is key to the building of peace, sustainable social and economic development, and intercultural dialogue. Open Educational Resources (OER) provide a strategic opportunity to improve the quality of education as well as facilitate policy dialogue, knowledge sharing and capacity building“. Libraries and librarians have the task to facilitate unrestriced and free access to information to everyone. This includes Open Educational Resources (OER), which enable their users to retain, reuse, revise, remix and redistribute – the „5R“ of David Wiley about OER - open content. Libraries have a traditional affinity to learning material, public libraries especially in the school sector, acadmic libraries in higher education. Moreover the importance of OER for public as well as for academic libraries increased continually during the past years. But what are the main issues for libraries and librarians that they need to consider? Where do they get reliable information about these issues? A semester project at the Applied University of Hannover identified six main topics and described them in the library context using „handbuch.io“, an open source platform for collaborative writing. During the writing process the project was visible and open for comments for everyone. Using a cc-by licence makes it possible for everyone to retain, reuse, revise, remix and redistribute this OER for librarians about OER. A DOI makes it permanently quotable.

    Publikationen und Gender-Effekte in der Mathematik

    Die Unterrepräsentation von Frauen in der wissenschaftlichen Mathematik hält trotz steigender Absolventinnenzahlen an. Publikationen sind ein wesentlicher Baustein wissenschaftlicher Karrieren. Deshalb werden sie in unserer Arbeit analysiert. Es werden zentraler Ergebnisse eines Forschungsartikels (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0165367) vorgestellt, weitere Forschung angekündigt und schließlich zu einer Diskussion eingeladen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen deutliche Unterschiede beim Publikationsverhalten zwischen Frauen und Männern mit Karrierenachteilen für Frauen. Die Geschlechterzuschreibung erfolgte algorithmisch auf Basis von Einträgen in zbMATH.

    Global-scale atmosphere monitoring by in-service aircraft – current achievements and future prospects of the European Research Infrastructure IAGOS

    The European Research Infrastructure IAGOS (In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System) operates a global-scale monitoring system for atmospheric trace gases, aerosols and clouds utilising the existing global civil aircraft. This new monitoring infrastructure builds on the heritage of the former research projects MOZAIC (Measurement of Ozone and Water Vapour on Airbus In-service Aircraft) and CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the Atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container). CARIBIC continues within IAGOS and acts as an important airborne measurement reference standard within the wider IAGOS fleet. IAGOS is a major contributor to the in-situ component of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), the successor to the Global Monitoring for the Environment and Security – Atmospheric Service, and is providing data for users in science, weather services and atmospherically relevant policy. IAGOS is unique in collecting regular in-situ observations of reactive gases, greenhouse gases and aerosol concentrations in the upper troposphere and lowermost stratosphere (UTLS) at high spatial resolution. It also provides routine vertical profiles of these species in the troposphere over continental sites or regions, many of which are undersampled by other networks or sampling studies, particularly in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. In combination with MOZAIC and CARIBIC, IAGOS has provided long-term observations of atmospheric chemical composition in the UTLS since 1994. The longest time series are 20 yr of temperature, H2O and O3, and 9–15 yr of aerosols, CO, NO y , CO2, CH4, N2O, SF6, Hg, acetone, ~30 HFCs and ~20 non-methane hydrocarbons. Among the scientific highlights which have emerged from these data sets are observations of extreme concentrations of O3 and CO over the Pacific basin that have never or rarely been recorded over the Atlantic region for the past 12 yr; detailed information on the temporal and regional distributions of O3, CO, H2O, NO y and aerosol particles in the UTLS, including the impacts of cross-tropopause transport, deep convection and lightning on the distribution of these species; characterisation of ice-supersaturated regions in the UTLS; and finally, improved understanding of the spatial distribution of upper tropospheric humidity including the finding that the UTLS is much more humid than previously assumed.
