TetGen: A quality tetrahedral mesh generator and a 3D Delaunay triangulator (Version 1.5 — User’s Manual)
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2013) Si, Hang
TetGen is a software for tetrahedral mesh generation. Its goal is to generate good quality tetrahedral meshes suitable for numerical methods and scientific computing. It can be used as either a standalone program or a library component integrated in other software. The purpose of this document is to give a brief explanation of the kind of tetrahedralizations and meshing problems handled by TetGen and to give a fairly detailed documentation about the usage of the program. Readers will learn how to create tetrahedral meshes using input files from the command line. Furthermore, the programming interface for calling TetGen from other programs is explained.

    Longitudinal dynamics of semiconductor lasers
(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2001) Philip, Jan
We investigate the longitudinal dynamics of semiconductor lasers using a model which couples a hyperbolic linear system of partial differential equations nonlinearly with ordinary differential equations. We prove the global existence and uniqueness of solutions using the theory of strongly continuous semigroups. Subsequently, we analyse the long-time behavior of the solutions in two steps. First, we find attracting invariant manifolds of low dimension benefitting from the fact that the system is singularly perturbed, i. e., the optical and the electronic variables operate on differente time-scales. The flow on these manifolds can be approximated by the so-called mode approximations. The dimension of these mode approximations depends on the number of critical eigenvalues of the linear hyperbolic operator. Next, we perform a detailed numerical and analytic bifurcation analysis for the two most common constellations. Starting from known results for the single-mode approximation, we investigate the two-mode approximation in the special case of a rapidly rotating phase difference between the two optical components. In this case, the first-order averaged model unveils the mechanisms for various phenomena observed in simulations of the complete system. Moreover, it predicts the existence of a more complex spatio-temporal behavior. In the scope of the averaged model, this is a bursting regime.

Synchronization Patterns in Modular Neuronal Networks: A Case Study of C. elegans
(Lausanne : Frontiers Media, 2019) Pournaki, Armin; Merfort, Leon; Ruiz, Jorge; Kouvaris, Nikos E.; Hövel, Philipp; Hizanidis, Johanne
We investigate synchronization patterns and chimera-like states in the modular multilayer topology of the connectome of Caenorhabditis elegans. In the special case of a designed network with two layers, one with electrical intra-community links and one with chemical inter-community links, chimera-like states are known to exist. Aiming at a more biological approach based on the actual connectivity data, we consider a network consisting of two synaptic (electrical and chemical) and one extrasynaptic (wireless) layers. Analyzing the structure and properties of this layered network using Multilayer-Louvain community detection, we identify modules whose nodes are more strongly coupled with each other than with the rest of the network. Based on this topology, we study the dynamics of coupled Hindmarsh-Rose neurons. Emerging synchronization patterns are quantified using the pairwise Euclidean distances between the values of all oscillators, locally within each community and globally across the network. We find a tendency of the wireless coupling to moderate the average coherence of the system: for stronger wireless coupling, the levels of synchronization decrease both locally and globally, and chimera-like states are not favored. By introducing an alternative method to define meaningful communities based on the dynamical correlations of the nodes, we obtain a structure that is dominated by two large communities. This promotes the emergence of chimera-like states and allows to relate the dynamics of the corresponding neurons to biological neuronal functions such as motor activities. © Copyright © 2019 Pournaki, Merfort, Ruiz, Kouvaris, Hövel and Hizanidis.

    Scattering matrices and Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps
(Amsterdam [u.a.] : Elsevier, 2017) Behrndt, Jussi; Malamud, Mark M.; Neidhardt, Hagen
A general representation formula for the scattering matrix of a scattering system consisting of two self-adjoint operators in terms of an abstract operator valued Titchmarsh–Weyl m-function is proved. This result is applied to scattering problems for different self-adjoint realizations of Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains, Schrödinger operators with singular potentials supported on hypersurfaces, and orthogonal couplings of Schrödinger operators. In these applications the scattering matrix is expressed in an explicit form with the help of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps.

A semismooth Newton method with analytical path-following for the H1-projection onto the Gibbs simplex
    (Oxford : Oxford Univ. Press, 2018) Adam, L.; Hintermüller, M.; Surowiec, T.M.
An efficient, function-space-based second-order method for the H1-projection onto the Gibbs simplex is presented. The method makes use of the theory of semismooth Newton methods in function spaces as well as Moreau–Yosida regularization and techniques from parametric optimization. A path-following technique is considered for the regularization parameter updates. A rigorous first- and second-order sensitivity analysis of the value function for the regularized problem is provided to justify the update scheme. The viability of the algorithm is then demonstrated for two applications found in the literature: binary image inpainting and labeled data classification. In both cases, the algorithm exhibits mesh-independent behavior.

Optimal Entropy-Transport problems and a new Hellinger–Kantorovich distance between positive measures
(Berlin ; Heidelberg : Springer, 2017) Liero, Matthias; Mielke, Alexander; Savaré, Giuseppe
We develop a full theory for the new class of Optimal Entropy-Transport problems between nonnegative and finite Radon measures in general topological spaces. These problems arise quite naturally by relaxing the marginal constraints typical of Optimal Transport problems: given a pair of finite measures (with possibly different total mass), one looks for minimizers of the sum of a linear transport functional and two convex entropy functionals, which quantify in some way the deviation of the marginals of the transport plan from the assigned measures. As a powerful application of this theory, we study the particular case of Logarithmic Entropy-Transport problems and introduce the new Hellinger–Kantorovich distance between measures in metric spaces. The striking connection between these two seemingly far topics allows for a deep analysis of the geometric properties of the new geodesic distance, which lies somehow between the well-known Hellinger–Kakutani and Kantorovich–Wasserstein distances.

Analysis, simulation and prediction of multivariate random fields with package randomfields
(Los Angeles, Calif. : UCLA, Dept. of Statistics, 2015) Schlather, Martin; Malinowski, Alexander; Menck, Peter J.; Oesting, Marco; Strokorb, Kirstin
Modeling of and inference on multivariate data that have been measured in space, such as temperature and pressure, are challenging tasks in environmental sciences, physics and materials science. We give an overview over and some background on modeling with crosscovariance models. The R package RandomFields supports the simulation, the parameter estimation and the prediction in particular for the linear model of coregionalization, the multivariate Matérn models, the delay model, and a spectrum of physically motivated vector valued models. An example on weather data is considered, illustrating the use of RandomFields for parameter estimation and prediction.

Density of convex intersections and applications
    (London : Royal Society, 2017) Hintermüller, M.; Rautenberg, C.N.; Rösel, S.
In this paper, we address density properties of intersections of convex sets in several function spaces. Using the concept of Γ-convergence, it is shown in a general framework, how these density issues naturally arise from the regularization, discretization or dualization of constrained optimization problems and from perturbed variational inequalities. A variety of density results (and counterexamples) for pointwise constraints in Sobolev spaces are presented and the corresponding regularity requirements on the upper bound are identified. The results are further discussed in the context of finite-element discretizations of sets associated with convex constraints. Finally, two applications are provided, which include elasto-plasticity and image restoration problems.
