A Data Model for Linked Stage Graph and the Historical Performing Arts Domain

The performing arts are complex, dynamic and embedded into societal and political systems. Providing means to research historical performing arts data is therefore crucial for understanding our history and culture. However, currently no commonly accepted ontology for historical performing arts data exists. On the example of the Linked Stage Graph, this position paper presents the ongoing process of creating an application-driven and efficient data model by leveraging and building upon existing standards and ontologies like CIDOC-CRM, FRBR, and FRBRoo.

Workshop on PIDs within NFDI: Report of the Working Group “Persistent Identifiers (PID)” of the Section Common Infrastructures of the NFDI

In order to gain an overview of the current state of the discussion on PIDs and for the identification of use cases for the initiation phase of a PID service within the NFDI basic services, the working group Persistent Identifier of the Section Common Infrastructures of the NFDI hosted an online workshop in January 2023. In the course of the workshop, members of nine different NFDI consortia presented the current application of PIDs in their consortia.

Development and Implementation of a Guideline for the Combination of Additively Manufactured Joint Assemblies with Wire Actuators made of Shape Memory Alloys

Smart Materials actuators in the form of wires made of shape memory alloys in combination with additively manufactured carrier components are used in a wide variety of prototype developments of innovative joint assemblies. This combination is relevant because of the same manufacturing costs of the additively manufactured components, which are independent of the quantity of parts, the free geometric design possibilities as well as the huge energy density of the aforementioned actuator technology. In particular, the focus is on the possibility of appropriately fitting large wire lengths on a compact part volume while taking into account acceptable force losses. Since there is no design guideline for such joint developments, each is individual, which results in unnecessarily long development times and a higher risk of errors. Based on selected in-house and third-party examples, integration possibilities of shape memory alloy wire actuators in additively manufactured carrier components are analysed and transferred into a universally applicable design guideline. These recommendations are brought into the framework of existing design guidelines of the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure – Association of German Engineers), namely VDI 2206 and VDI 2221 with extensions for additive manufacturing, for a better usability and integrability into existing processes. Finally, this results in a simplified access to the topic of the combination of additive manufacturing and shape memory alloys and a more efficient realisation of such joint developments.

Optimierte Erfassung und Veröffentlichung von Artikelmetadaten für eine nachhaltige Metadatenallmende im OA-Ökosystem zur Unterstützung von Auffindbarkeit und Evaluation

Die Metadatenallmende ist ein wichtiger Baustein für den Wandel hin zu einem diversen Open-Access-Ökosystem. Nur mit offenen und hochwertigen Metadaten, die mindestens die gleiche oder sogar höhere Qualität und Abdeckung als die Metadaten-Silos etablierter kommerzieller Verlage erreichen, können unabhängige Zeitschriften auf Augenhöhe Themen wie Auffindbarkeit und faire Evaluation von Forschenden angehen. Wir stellen einen Arbeitsablauf und Werkzeuge vor, die eine Professionalisierung der Metadatenprozesse von unabhängigen, scholar-led OA-Journals unterstützen. Diese Journals können damit ihre Sichtbarkeit im Wissenschaftssystem und ihre Bedeutung als Publikationsort erhöhen. Dazu wird die global verbreitete Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) Open Journal Systems (OJS) um Funktionen erweitert, die a) Eingabe, Kuratierung und Anreicherung von artikelbezogenen Metadaten durch Autor:innen und Editor:innen und b) den Export dieser Metadaten an offene Datenquellen wie z. B. Wikidata ermöglichen. Diese Erweiterung wird durch OJS-Plugins und auch Anpassung der OJS-Kernsoftware in den folgenden Anwendungsfällen umgesetzt: Erstens ermöglicht die Integration von validierten persistenten Identifikatoren (PIDs) und geographischen Metadaten als Teil der Publikationsmetadaten eine bessere Auffindbarkeit und von Artikeln aus Open-Access-Zeitschriften. PIDs und Geometadaten stellen Verbindungen zu anderen Publikationen, akademischen Events, physischen Proben und wissenschaftlichen Instrumenten her und verknüpfen so verwandte Artikel über Zeitschriften und Wissenschaftsdisziplinen hinweg. Auf Basis dieser Metadaten werden zum Beispiel eine Suchplattform realisiert, die wissenschaftliche Artikel über Disziplingrenzen und Publikationsplatformen hinweg als offene Daten interaktiv auf einer Karte darstellt, und semantisch bedeutsame Links in Artikeln und ihren Landing Pages eingefügt. Zweitens werden Zitationsmetadaten während des Einreichungs- und Begutachtungsprozesses strukturiert erfasst und frei in standardisierten Formaten veröffentlicht. Durch die innovative und benutzerfreundliche Metadatenerfassung im Zuge des wissenschaftlichen Ver­öffentlichungsprozesses können Open-Access-Artikel in transparenten zitationsbasierten Evaluationsmetriken verwendet werden. Diese Neuerungen unterstützen eine offene Publikationskultur und -praxis. In diesem Beitrag berichten wir vom aktuellen Arbeitsstand zu den Anwendungsfällen und beschreiben eine Vision für eine neuartige verteilte Erfassung und Veröffentlichung offener Metadaten.

An Approach to Evaluate User Interfaces in a Scholarly Knowledge Communication Domain

The amount of research articles produced every day is overwhelming: scholarly knowledge is getting harder to communicate and easier to get lost. A possible solution is to represent the information in knowledge graphs: structures representing knowledge in networks of entities, their semantic types, and relationships between them. But this solution has its own drawback: given its very specific task, it requires new methods for designing and evaluating user interfaces. In this paper, we propose an approach for user interface evaluation in the knowledge communication domain. We base our methodology on the well-established Cognitive Walkthough approach but employ a different set of questions, tailoring the method towards domain-specific needs. We demonstrate our approach on a scholarly knowledge graph implementation called Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG).

Shaping Digital Transformation for a Sustainable Society: Contributions from Bits & Bäume

The second ‹Bits & Bäume› conference took place in Berlin in 2022. Once again, it provided a space for critical tech and sustainability communities to share ideas and collaborate towards the common goal of shaping digitalisation to foster sustainability. This companion book compiles the insights, work, research and opinions of more than 65 authors with a ‹Bits & Bäume› background, including practitioners, researchers and activists. The articles included in this journal demonstrate the progress made in merging ‹Bits› and ‹Bäume› (Trees) topics since our first publication in 2019 by addressing different sub-areas of the intersections between digitalisation and sustainability. Encompassing a wide range of topics, the articles delve into pressing challenges such as the resource consumption, power implications and democratic governance of digital infrastructures, AI, blockchains, mobile apps, and other software applications, as well as the need to address the unsustainable practices and paradigms of e.g., the platform economy. Offering not only transparency but also solutions, the journal presents practical approaches and concepts related to the necessary transformation, such as the Computer Science for Future programme. It also contains articles commenting on current political developments, such as the EU legislation on sustainability and freedom-related aspects of ICT devices. Further articles highlight the power of and need for an active civil society, aiming to inspire activism. This journal caters for everyone: Are you just getting into the topics around Bits & Bäume? Have you been involved in this field for many years, or are you an expert in one of the areas touched on here? In this journal you will find both introductory topics, such as illustrations on the challenges of today's digitalised society, and also advanced topics, such as conceptual and regulatory discussions. Whatever your background, we think you’ll enjoy the read, learn something new on the way, and get inspired. Ultimately, we are all united by the overarching goal of shaping digitalisation as part of a necessary socio-ecological change; one which contributes to a sustainable and just society.

Diving into Knowledge Graphs for Patents: Open Challenges and Benefits

Textual documents are the means of sharing information and preserving knowledge for a large variety of domains. The patent domain is also using such a paradigm which is becoming difficult to maintain and is limiting the potentialities of using advanced AI systems for domain analysis. To overcome this issue, it is more and more frequent to find approaches to transform textual representations into Knowledge Graphs (KGs). In this position paper, we discuss KGs within the patent domain, present its challenges, and envision the benefits of such technologies for this domain. In addition, this paper provides insights of such KGs by reproducing an existing pipeline to create KGs and applying it to patents in the computer science domain.

B!SON - an open tool to help researchers find suitable Open Access journals for their work

The poster presents key facts on B!SON, an open recommendation service for Open Access journals. There is a whole range of web-based services designed to help researchers find a suitable journal for their findings. Few of them, however, are inherently oriented towards the needs and interests of the research community: they are often provided by commercial actors, only include journals of one single (major) publisher, the procedures for the recommendations are not transparent, the source code is not publicly available, their sustainability is unclear or they are merely aggregated journal lists with advanced filter functions. B!SON has set out to do things differently: It is a tool developed and provided by two major German academic libraries - TIB (Technische Informationsbibliothek) and SLUB (Saxonian State and University Library Dresden). It includes only genuine Open Access journals, uses only community-based, open data sources from DOAJ and OpenCitations, discloses its recommendation algorithm based on semantic and bibliometric methods, handles user data sensitively and has been designed with sustainability in mind. B!SON's simple user interface with input fields for a manuscript's title, abstract and references provides users with a list of DOAJ-listed journals in which similar research has been published. A similarity score is provided for each journal listed, along with the underlying articles where similarity was found, to make the recommendation verifiable.

Mehr als PDFs im Internet – Knowledge Exchange Analysis Report on Alternative Publishing Platforms

Immer neue Publikationsplattformen mit unterschiedlichsten Funktionalitäten und Zielen entstehen und bieten ihre Services an. Viele Ansätze bilden dabei ein Gegengewicht zu den “klassischen” Abläufen im Verlagswesen. Die Einbeziehung von Preprints, die Verknüpfung unterschiedlicher Forschungs-Outputs (wie Daten, Laborprotokolle oder Softwarecode), offene Begutachtungsverfahren oder neue Geschäftsmodelle sind nur einige Aspekte, die von den unterschiedlichen Plattformen adressiert werden. Im Rahmen einer Task and Finish Group von Knowledge Exchange (KE) wird eine Taxonomie über solche alternativen Publikationsplattformen erstellt. Diese Taxonomie soll dabei helfen, einen besseren Überblick über die diversen Plattformen zu erhalten und sie sichtbarer zu machen. Der erste Schritt der T&F Group war die Erstellung eines Scoping-Papers (https://doi.org/10.21428/996e2e37.3ebdc864), in dem sich diesem Thema genähert wurde. Das Dokument selbst ist auf der “alternativen” Plattform PubPub entstanden, die eine aktive Mitarbeit der Community erlaubt und die Versionierung des Dokuments übernimmt. Im Frühjahr 2023 hat die T&F Group zur Beteiligung an einer Umfrage aufgerufen, um in einem zweiten Schritt eine Taxonomie der unterschiedlichen Plattformen zu erstellen. Die Umfrage richtete sich an alle Plattformen, die im Bereich des Open-Access-Publizierens tätig sind und in die Taxonomie der alternativen Publikationsplattformen von der Knowledge Exchange aufgenommen werden möchten. Der Vortrag beleuchtet die verschiedenen Wege alternativer Publikationsplattformen und präsentiert erste Ergebnisse aus der Umfrage und gibt somit einen Ausblick auf die angestrebte Taxonomie.
