    Supporting a VIVO Regional Community

    VIVO is member-supported, open source software and an ontology for representing scholarship. VIVO supports recording, editing, searching, browsing, and visualizing scholarly activity. VIVO encourages showcasing the scholarly record, research discovery, expert finding, network analysis, and assessment of research impact. When installed and populated with researcher interests, activities, and accomplishments by an institution, VIVO enables the discovery of research and scholarship across disciplines at that institution and beyond. When VIVO is implemented in a research institution, there is a need to adjust the software to local needs. If a system has its roots in a different country, the adjustments can be more comprehensive. The VIVO ontology and a lot of the underlying assumptions, which are based on the realities of the US scholarly landscape, must be “tailored” to be able to depict the academic culture. The differences concern both the meaning of the translated terms and the usage of the terms in the common language use. This one-hour webinar aims at explaining some of the differences we have experienced while trying to make VIVO compliant to the needs of the German VIVO community. Our motives, goals, tools, and means of communication will be introduced to help others learn from our experiences. Time will be reserved for questions following the presentation. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    ORCID Deutschland Konsortium

    Im Rahmen des ORCID DE Projekts findet am Donnerstag, dem 27.04.2017, um 10:00 Uhr das erste ORCID DE-Webinar mit dem Titel „ORCID, eine Einführung für wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen“ statt. Die damit beginnende Reihe von ORCID-DE-Webinaren soll wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen in Deutschland hinsichtlich administrativer, technischer und weiterer Themen unterstützen. Das erste Webinar richtet sich an Vertreterinnen und Vertreter wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen in Deutschland, die eine Integration von ORCID an ihrer Institution erwägen bzw. planen. Im ersten Teil des Webinars gibt Paul Vierkant, Mitarbeiter im ORCID-DE-Projekt, eine allgemeine Einführung, welche Rolle und Funktionen ORCID an einer wissenschaftlichen Institution haben kann. Im zweiten Teil des Webinars stellt Britta Dreyer von der Technischen Informationsbibliothek Hannover (TIB) das ORCID Deutschland Konsortium vor und erläutert die Vorteile einer Mitgliedschaft. Im Anschluss an das zwanzigminütige Webinar besteht die Möglichkeit, dem Referenten sowie der Referentin über den Livechat Fragen zu stellen und mit anderen Teilnehmern zu diskutieren.

    Some analytical results for an algebraic flux correction scheme for a steady convection-diffusion equation in 1D

    Algebraic flux correction schemes are nonlinear discretizations of convection dominated problems. In this work, a scheme from this class is studied for a steady-state convection-diffusion equation in one dimension. It is proved that this scheme satisfies the discrete maximum principle. Also, as it is a nonlinear scheme, the solvability of the linear subproblems arising in a Picard iteration is studied, where positive and negative results are proved. Furthermore, the non-existence of solutions for the nonlinear scheme is proved by means of counterexamples. Therefore, a modification of the method, which ensures the existence of a solution, is proposed. A weak version of the discrete maximum principle is proved for this modified method.
