    Unveiling Relations in the Industry 4.0 Standards Landscape Based on Knowledge Graph Embeddings

    Industry 4.0 (I4.0) standards and standardization frameworks have been proposed with the goal of empowering interoperability in smart factories. These standards enable the description and interaction of the main components, systems, and processes inside of a smart factory. Due to the growing number of frameworks and standards, there is an increasing need for approaches that automatically analyze the landscape of I4.0 standards. Standardization frameworks classify standards according to their functions into layers and dimensions. However, similar standards can be classified differently across the frameworks, producing, thus, interoperability conflicts among them. Semantic-based approaches that rely on ontologies and knowledge graphs, have been proposed to represent standards, known relations among them, as well as their classification according to existing frameworks. Albeit informative, the structured modeling of the I4.0 landscape only provides the foundations for detecting interoperability issues. Thus, graph-based analytical methods able to exploit knowledge encoded by these approaches, are required to uncover alignments among standards. We study the relatedness among standards and frameworks based on community analysis to discover knowledge that helps to cope with interoperability conflicts between standards. We use knowledge graph embeddings to automatically create these communities exploiting the meaning of the existing relationships. In particular, we focus on the identification of similar standards, i.e., communities of standards, and analyze their properties to detect unknown relations. We empirically evaluate our approach on a knowledge graph of I4.0 standards using the Trans∗ family of embedding models for knowledge graph entities. Our results are promising and suggest that relations among standards can be detected accurately.

    Using Active Surface Plasmons in a Multibit Optical Storage Device to Emulate Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity

    Artificial intelligence takes inspiration from the functionalities and structure of the brain to solve complex tasks and allow learning. Yet, hardware realization that simulates the synaptic activities realized with electrical devices still lags behind computer software implementation, which has improved significantly during the past decade. Herein, the capability to emulate synaptic functionalities by exploiting surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is shown. By depositing photochromic switching molecules (diarylethene) on a thin film of gold, it is possible to reliably control the electronic configuration of the molecules upon illumination cycles with UV and visible light. These reversible changes modulate the dielectric function of the photochromic film and thus enable the effective control of the SPP dispersion relation at the molecule/gold interface. The plasmonic device displays fundamental functions of a synapse such as potentiation, depression, and long-term plasticity. The integration of such plasmonic devices in an artificial neural network is deployed in plasmonic neuroinspired circuits for optical computing and data transmission. © 2020 The Authors.     Shaping Digital Transformation for a Sustainable Society: Contributions from Bits & Bäume

    The second ‹Bits & Bäume› conference took place in Berlin in 2022. Once again, it provided a space for critical tech and sustainability communities to share ideas and collaborate towards the common goal of shaping digitalisation to foster sustainability. This companion book compiles the insights, work, research and opinions of more than 65 authors with a ‹Bits & Bäume› background, including practitioners, researchers and activists. The articles included in this journal demonstrate the progress made in merging ‹Bits› and ‹Bäume› (Trees) topics since our first publication in 2019 by addressing different sub-areas of the intersections between digitalisation and sustainability. Encompassing a wide range of topics, the articles delve into pressing challenges such as the resource consumption, power implications and democratic governance of digital infrastructures, AI, blockchains, mobile apps, and other software applications, as well as the need to address the unsustainable practices and paradigms of e.g., the platform economy. Offering not only transparency but also solutions, the journal presents practical approaches and concepts related to the necessary transformation, such as the Computer Science for Future programme. It also contains articles commenting on current political developments, such as the EU legislation on sustainability and freedom-related aspects of ICT devices. Further articles highlight the power of and need for an active civil society, aiming to inspire activism. This journal caters for everyone: Are you just getting into the topics around Bits & Bäume? Have you been involved in this field for many years, or are you an expert in one of the areas touched on here? In this journal you will find both introductory topics, such as illustrations on the challenges of today's digitalised society, and also advanced topics, such as conceptual and regulatory discussions.
