Different academic stakeholders around the world have reacted differently to this war, some imposing sanctions against Russia and/or providing aid to Ukraine. Some scientific publishers have partially or temporarily suspended sales and marketing of products and services to research organizations in Russia and Belarus. The issue of banning publication in international journals by authors from Russian institutions remains controversial and needs to be carefully considered by various stakeholders. © 2022 The Authors. - ItemThe geometry of the space of branched rough paths(Chichester : Wiley, 2020) Tapia, Nikolas; Zambotti, LorenzoWe construct an explicit transitive free action of a Banach space of Hölder functions on the space of branched rough paths, which yields in particular a bijection between these two spaces. This endows the space of branched rough paths with the structure of a principal homogeneous space over a Banach space and allows to characterize its automorphisms. The construction is based on the Baker–Campbell–Hausdorff formula, on a constructive version of the Lyons–Victoir extension theorem and on the Hairer–Kelly map, which allows to describe branched rough paths in terms of anisotropic geometric rough paths.
- ItemSynthesis of novel chemicals from cardanol as a product of cashew nutshell processing(Chichester : Wiley, 2020) Deutsch, Jens; Köckritz, AngelaThe conversion of the worldwide chemical production from fossil to sustainable resources is currently one of the most urgent tasks for the chemical industry. Based on this approach cardanol, a mixture of phenols with C15-chains as substituents is produced in some countries of the tropical zone from the processing of cashew nutshells. The paper reports the specific transformation of the aromatic moiety in this cheap material, and thus, the development of a novel route to potential useful green bifunctional chemicals in gram scale. Accordingly, cardanol was converted successfully in three steps into hexane-1,6-diols. The evaluation of appropriate synthesis methods and suitable conditions for each of these reaction steps is presented as an essential topic of these investigations. The target compounds synthesized in the reaction sequence are potential building blocks for future biomass-based chemicals and monomers for green polymeric materials, surfactants, and lubricants.
- ItemAggregation and mobility of membrane proteins interplay with local lipid order in the plasma membrane of T cells(Chichester : Wiley, 2021) Urbančič, Iztok; Schiffelers, Lisa; Jenkins, Edward; Gong, Weijian; Santos, Ana Mafalda; Schneider, Falk; O'Brien-Ball, Caitlin; Vuong, Mai Tuyet; Ashman, Nicole; Sezgin, Erdinc; Eggeling, ChristianTo disentangle the elusive lipid-protein interactions in T-cell activation, we investigate how externally imposed variations in mobility of key membrane proteins (T-cell receptor [TCR], kinase Lck, and phosphatase CD45) affect the local lipid order and protein colocalisation. Using spectral imaging with polarity-sensitive membrane probes in model membranes and live Jurkat T cells, we find that partial immobilisation of proteins (including TCR) by aggregation or ligand binding changes their preference towards a more ordered lipid environment, which can recruit Lck. Our data suggest that the cellular membrane is poised to modulate the frequency of protein encounters upon alterations of their mobility, for example in ligand binding, which offers new mechanistic insight into the involvement of lipid-mediated interactions in membrane-hosted signalling events.
- ItemUnlocking the hidden realms: analysing the Ukrainian journal landscape with Ulrichsweb(Chichester : Wiley, 2024) Nazarovets, MarynaAlthough Ukraine is one of the leading countries in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of its number of scholarly journals, most of these journals are not widely recognized by the scientific community. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of scholarly journal publishing in Ukraine, using data from the Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory. The study aims to provide insights into the quantity and characteristics of Ukrainian journals, with a specific focus on historical context, publisher diversity, language of publication, and subject distribution. The findings reveal that Ulrichsweb encompasses details on over 1,500 active Ukrainian journal titles, some tracing their origins back to the 19th century. Notably, 85% of these journals are disseminated by academic institutions, including universities and research organizations. This study exemplifies the utility of Ulrichsweb as a valuable tool for investigating national scholarly journals underrepresented in other databases.
