Strong effects of uniaxial pressure and short-range correlations in Cr2Ge2Te6
    (College Park, MD : APS, 2022) Spachmann, S.; Elghandour, A.; Selter, S.; Büchner, B.; Aswartham, S.; Klingeler, R.
Cr2Ge2Te6 is a quasi-two-dimensional semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet down to the bilayer with great potential for technological applications. Engineering the critical temperature to achieve room-temperature applications is one of the critical next steps on this path. Here, we report high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies on Cr2Ge2Te6 single crystals which directly prove significant magnetoelastic coupling and provide quantitative values of the large uniaxial pressure effects on long-range magnetic order (∂TC/∂pc=24.7 K/GPa and ∂TC/∂pab=−15.6 K/GPa) derived from thermodynamic relations. Moderate in-plane strain is thus sufficient to strongly enhance ferromagnetism in Cr2Ge2Te6 up to room temperature. Moreover, unambiguous signs of short-range magnetic order up to 200 K are found.

Ripple coarsening on ion beam-eroded surfaces
    (New York, NY [u.a.] : Springer, 2014) Teichmann, M.; Lorbeer, J.; Frost, F.; Rauschenbach, B.
Abstract: The temporal evolution of ripple pattern on Ge, Si, Al2O3, and SiO2 by low-energy ion beam erosion with Xe + ions is studied. The experiments focus on the ripple dynamics in a fluence range from 1.1 × 1017 cm-2 to 1.3 × 1019 cm-2 at ion incidence angles of 65° and 75° and ion energies of 600 and 1,200 eV. At low fluences a short-wavelength ripple structure emerges on the surface that is superimposed and later on dominated by long wavelength structures for increasing fluences. The coarsening of short wavelength ripples depends on the material system and angle of incidence. These observations are associated with the influence of reflected primary ions and gradient-dependent sputtering. The investigations reveal that coarsening of the pattern is a universal behavior for all investigated materials, just at the earliest accessible stage of surface evolution.

Possible experimental realization of a basic Z 2 topological semimetal in GaGeTe
    (College Park, MD : American Institute of Physics, 2019) Haubold, E.; Fedorov, A.; Pielnhofer, F.; Rusinov, I.P.; Menshchikova, T.V.; Duppel, V.; Friedrich, D.; Weihrich, R.; Pfitzner, A.; Zeugner, A.; Isaeva, A.; Thirupathaiah, S.; Kushnirenko, Y.; Rienks, E.; Kim, T.; Chulkov, E.V.; Büchner, B.; Borisenko, S.
We report experimental and theoretical evidence that GaGeTe is a basic Z2 topological semimetal with three types of charge carriers: bulk-originated electrons and holes as well as surface state electrons. This electronic situation is qualitatively similar to the classic 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3, but important differences account for an unprecedented transport scenario in GaGeTe. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with advanced band structure calculations show a small indirect energy gap caused by a peculiar band inversion at the T-point of the Brillouin zone in GaGeTe. An energy overlap of the valence and conduction bands brings both electron and holelike carriers to the Fermi level, while the momentum gap between the corresponding dispersions remains finite. We argue that peculiarities of the electronic spectrum of GaGeTe have a fundamental importance for the physics of topological matter and may boost the material's application potential.

Crossover of skyrmion and helical modulations in noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets
(Bristol : Institute of Physics Publishing, 2018) Leonov, A.O.; Bogdanov, A.N.
The coupling between angular (twisting) and longitudinal modulations arising near the ordering temperature of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets strongly influences the structure of skyrmion states and their evolution in an applied magnetic field. In the precursor states of cubic helimagnets, a continuous transformation of skyrmion lattices into the saturated state is replaced by the first-order processes accompanied by the formation of multidomain states. Recently the effects imposed by dominant longitudinal modulations have been reported in bulk MnSi and FeGe. Similar phenomena can be observed in the precursor regions of cubic helimagnet epilayers and in easy-plane chiral ferromagnets (e.g. in the hexagonal helimagnet CrNb3S6).

In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy of Disorder–Order Transition in Epitaxially Stabilized FeGe2
(Washington, DC : Soc., 2021) Terker, Markus; Nicolai, Lars; Gaucher, Samuel; Herfort, Jens; Trampert, Achim
Isothermal crystallization of amorphous Ge deposited on a cubic Fe3Si/GaAs(001) substrate is performed by in situ annealing within a transmission electron microscope. It was found that the formation of epitaxially aligned tetragonal FeGe2 is associated with a disorder–order phase transition mainly consisting of a rearrangement of the Fe/vacancy sublattice from a random distribution to alternating filled and empty layers. Additionally, atomically resolved high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy demonstrated that the vertical lattice spacing of the Ge sublattice reduces across vacancy layers, indicating that strain minimization plays a role in the phase transition process. Crystallization and ordering are both found to proceed layer-by-layer and with square-root-shaped kinetics with a smaller transition rate for the latter.

Evidence of the Anomalous Fluctuating Magnetic State by Pressure-Driven 4f Valence Change in EuNiGe3
    (Washington, DC : ACS, 2023) Chen, K.; Luo, C.; Zhao, Y.; Baudelet, F.; Maurya, A.; Thamizhavel, A.; Rößler, U. K.; Makarov, D.; Radu, F.
In rare-earth compounds with valence fluctuation, the proximity of the 4f level to the Fermi energy leads to instabilities of the charge configuration and the magnetic moment. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence for an induced magnetic polarization of the Eu3+ atomic shell with J = 0, due to intra-atomic exchange and spin-orbital coupling interactions with the Eu2+ atomic shell. By applying external pressure, a transition from antiferromagnetic to a fluctuating behavior in EuNiGe3 single crystals is probed. Magnetic polarization is observed for both valence states of Eu2+ and Eu3+ across the entire pressure range. The anomalous magnetism is discussed in terms of a homogeneous intermediate valence state where frustrated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya couplings are enhanced by the onset of spin-orbital interaction and engender a chiral spin-liquid-like precursor.
