    Revisiting economic burdens of malaria in the face of climate change: a conceptual analysis for Ethiopia

    Purpose: Climate change affects the geographic and seasonal range of malaria incidence, especially, in poor tropical countries. This paper aims to attempt to conceptualize the potential economic repercussions of such effects with its focus on Ethiopia. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is conceptual and descriptive in its design. It first reviews existing literature and evidence on the economic burdens of malaria, and the impacts of climate change on malaria disease. It then draws the economic implications of the expected malaria risk under the future climate. This is accompanied by a discussion on a set of methods that can be used to quantify the economic effects of malaria with or without climate change. Findings: A review of available evidence shows that climate change is likely to increase the geographic and seasonal range of malaria incidence in Ethiopia. The economic consequences of even a marginal increase in malaria risk will be substantial as one considers the projected impacts of climate change through other channels, the current population exposed to malaria risk and the country’s health system, economic structure and level of investment. The potential effects have the potency to require more household and public spending for health, to perpetuate poverty and inequality and to strain agricultural and regional development. Originality/value: This paper sheds light on the economic implications of climate change impacts on malaria, particularly, in Agrarian countries laying in the tropics. It illustrates how such impacts will interact with other impact channels of climate change, and thus evolve to influence the macro-economy. The paper also proposes a set of methods that can be used to quantify the potential economic effects of malaria. The paper seeks to stimulate future research on this important topic which rather has been neglected. © 2020, Amsalu Woldie Yalew.

    Sustainable food protein supply reconciling human and ecosystem health: A Leibniz Position

    Many global health risks are related to what and how much we eat. At the same time, the production of food, especially from animal origin, contributes to environmental change at a scale that threatens boundaries of a safe operating space for humanity. Here we outline viable solutions how to reconcile healthy protein consumption and sustainable protein production which requires a solid, interdisciplinary evidence base. We review the role of proteins for human and ecosystem health, including physiological effects of dietary proteins, production potentials from agricultural and aquaculture systems, environmental impacts of protein production, and mitigation potentials of transforming current production systems. Various protein sources from plant and animal origin, including insects and fish, are discussed in the light of their health and environmental implications. Integration of available knowledge is essential to move from a dual problem description (“healthy diets versus environment”) towards approaches that frame the food challenge of reconciling human and ecosystem health in the context of planetary health. This endeavor requires a shifting focus from metrics at the level of macronutrients to whole diets and a better understanding of the full cascade of health effects caused by dietary proteins, including health risks from food-related environmental degradation. © 2020

    Safe-by-Design part I: Proposal for nanospecific human health safety aspects needed along the innovation process

    Safe-by-Design aims to reduce uncertainties and/or increase the human health and environmental safety from already early in the innovation process onwards and will thereby contribute to increased innovation efficiency, economic viability, interdisciplinary collaboration, consumers trust and improve sustainability. Since most innovators or designers are neither toxicologists nor risk assessors, considering human health safety aspects within their innovation process may be challenging. This paper provides sets of questions that can help innovators to assess nanospecific human health safety aspects of their product or material along the various stages of the innovation process. Addressing these questions will facilitate innovators to identify which type of information may support decisions on how to address potential human health risks in the innovation process. The identified information on the human health safety aspects can help innovators to decide if further investments in the product or material are beneficial. It may allow them to rank, prioritize and choose safer alternatives early in the innovation process. This may enable innovators to better anticipate on potential safety issues in an early stage, preventing these safety issues to become an innovation killer in a later stage of the innovation process. This approach to identify potential nanospecific human health risks should be considered as complementary to current regulations. The applicability of this approach was evaluated using a few industrial case studies. To determine if the approach is applicable to the innovation of a broader group of nanomaterials and nano-enabled products, more experience within various industrial sectors is needed.
