Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and thermogravimetric analysis of two series of substituted (metallo)tetraphenylporphyrins

2017-6-2, Al-Shewiki, Rasha K., Mende, Carola, Buschbeck, Roy, Siles, Pablo F., Schmidt, Oliver G., Rüffer, Tobias, Lang, Heinrich

Subsequent treatment of H2TPP(CO2H)4 (tetra(p-carboxylic acid phenyl)porphyrin, 1) with an excess of oxalyl chloride and HNR2 afforded H2TPP(C(O)NR2)4 (R = Me, 2; iPr, 3) with yields exceeding 80%. The porphyrins 2 and 3 could be converted to the corresponding metalloporphyrins MTPP(C(O)NR2)4 (R = Me/iPr for M = Zn (2a, 3a); Cu (2b, 3b); Ni (2c, 3c); Co (2d, 3d)) by the addition of 3 equiv of anhydrous MCl2 (M = Zn, Cu, Ni, Co) to dimethylformamide solutions of 2 and 3 at elevated temperatures. Metalloporphyrins 2a–d and 3a–d were obtained in yields exceeding 60% and have been, as well as 2 and 3, characterized by elemental analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) and IR and UV–vis spectroscopy. Porphyrins 2, 2a–d and 3, 3a–d are not suitable for organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD), which is attributed to their comparatively low thermal stability as determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) of selected representatives.

Highly Planarized Naphthalene Diimide-Bifuran Copolymers with Unexpected Charge Transport Performance

2017, Matsidik, Rukiya, Luzio, Alessandro, Askin, Özge, Fazzi, Daniele, Sepe, Alessandro, Steiner, Ullrich, Komber, Hartmut, Caironi, Mario, Sommer, Michael

The synthesis, characterization, and charge transport performance of novel copolymers PNDIFu2 made from alternating naphthalene diimide (NDI) and bifuran (Fu2) units are reported. Usage of potentially biomass-derived Fu2 as alternating repeat unit enables flattened polymer backbones due to reduced steric interactions between the imide oxygens and Fu2 units, as seen by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and UV-vis spectroscopy. Aggregation of PNDIFu2 in solution is enhanced if compared to the analogous NDI-bithiophene (T2) copolymers PNDIT2, occurring in all solvents and temperatures probed. PNDIFu2 features a smaller π-π stacking distance of 0.35 nm compared to 0.39 nm seen for PNDIT2. Alignment of aggregates in films is achieved by using off-center spin coating, whereby PNDIFu2 exhibits a stronger dichroic ratio and transport anisotropy in field-effect transistors (FET) compared to PNDIT2, with an overall good electron mobility of 0.21 cm2/(V s). Despite an enhanced backbone planarity, the smaller π-π stacking and the enhanced charge transport anisotropy, the electron mobility of PNDIFu2 is about three times lower compared to PNDIT2. Density functional theory calculations suggest that charge transport in PNDIFu2 is limited by enhanced polaron localization compared to PNDIT2.

Physical gels of poly(vinylamine) by thermal curing

2020, Fischer, Thorsten, Köhler, Jens, Möller, Martin, Singh, Smriti

Physical gels are a versatile class of materials which can find application in sensors, electrochemistry, biomedicine or rheological modifiers. Herein, we present a hydrogen-bonded physical gel which is based on the interaction between phenylcarbonate telechelic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PC) and poly(vinyl amine-co-acetamide) (p(VAm-co-VAA)). The critical gelation concentration was found to be 10 wt% by rheology and NMR. UV-vis spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering reveal the formation of aggregates in the gel. Rheology and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to show the effect of thermal curing on the mechanical properties of the physical gel. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2020.
