- ItemAveraging of time-periodic dissipation potentials in rate-independent processes : dedicated to Tomáš Roubícek on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2016) Heida, Martin; Mielke, AlexanderWe study the existence and well-posedness of rate-independent systems (or hysteresis operators) with a dissipation potential that oscillates in time with period. In particular, for the case of quadratic energies in a Hilbert space, we study the averaging limit → 0 and show that the effective dissipation potential is given by the minimum of all friction thresholds in one period, more precisely as the intersection of all the characteristic domains. We show that the rates of the process do not converge weakly, hence our analysis uses the notion of energetic solutions and relies on a detailed estimates to obtain a suitable qui-continuity of the solutions in the limit → 0.
- ItemConsistency and convergence for a family of finite volume discretizations of the Fokker--Planck operator(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2020) Heida, Martin; Kantner, Markus; Stephan, ArturWe introduce a family of various finite volume discretization schemes for the Fokker--Planck operator, which are characterized by different weight functions on the edges. This family particularly includes the well-established Scharfetter--Gummel discretization as well as the recently developed square-root approximation (SQRA) scheme. We motivate this family of discretizations both from the numerical and the modeling point of view and provide a uniform consistency and error analysis. Our main results state that the convergence order primarily depends on the quality of the mesh and in second place on the quality of the weights. We show by numerical experiments that for small gradients the choice of the optimal representative of the discretization family is highly non-trivial while for large gradients the Scharfetter--Gummel scheme stands out compared to the others.
- ItemConsistency and convergence for a family of finite volume discretizations of the Fokker–Planck operator(Les Ulis : EDP Sciences, 2021) Heida, Martin; Kantner, Markus; Stephan, ArturWe introduce a family of various finite volume discretization schemes for the Fokker–Planck operator, which are characterized by different Stolarsky weight functions on the edges. This family particularly includes the well-established Scharfetter–Gummel discretization as well as the recently developed square-root approximation (SQRA) scheme. We motivate this family of discretizations both from the numerical and the modeling point of view and provide a uniform consistency and error analysis. Our main results state that the convergence order primarily depends on the quality of the mesh and in second place on the choice of the Stolarsky weights. We show that the Scharfetter–Gummel scheme has the analytically best convergence properties but also that there exists a whole branch of Stolarsky means with the same convergence quality. We show by numerical experiments that for small convection the choice of the optimal representative of the discretization family is highly non-trivial, while for large gradients the Scharfetter–Gummel scheme stands out compared to the others.
- ItemConsistency and order 1 convergence of cell-centered finite volume discretizations of degenerate elliptic problems in any space dimension(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2022) Heida, Martin; Sikorski, Alexander; Weber, MarcusWe study consistency of cell-centered finite difference methods for elliptic equations with degenerate coefficients in any space dimension $dgeq2$. This results in order of convergence estimates in the natural weighted energy norm and in the weighted discrete $L^2$-norm on admissible meshes. The cells of meshes under consideration may be very irregular in size. We particularly allow the size of certain cells to remain bounded from below even in the asymptotic limit. For uniform meshes we show that the order of convergence is at least 1 in the energy semi-norm, provided the discrete and continuous solutions exist and the continuous solution has $H^2$ regularity.
- ItemEstimation of the infinitesimal generator by square-root approximation(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2017) Donati, Luca; Heida, Martin; Weber, Marcus; Keller, BettinaFor the analysis of molecular processes, the estimation of time-scales, i.e., tran- sition rates, is very important. Estimating the transition rates between molecular conformations is - from a mathematical point of view - an invariant subspace projec- tion problem. A certain infinitesimal generator acting on function space is projected to a low-dimensional rate matrix. This projection can be performed in two steps. First, the infinitesimal generator is discretized, then the invariant subspace is ap- proximated and used for the subspace projection. In our approach, the discretization will be based on a Voronoi tessellation of the conformational space. We will show that the discretized infinitesimal generator can simply be approximated by the ge- ometric average of the Boltzmann weights of the Voronoi cells. Thus, there is a direct correlation between the potential energy surface of molecular structures and the transition rates of conformational changes. We present results for a 2d-diffusion process and Alanine dipeptide.
- ItemFractal homogenization of a multiscale interface problem(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2017) Heida, Martin; Kornhuber, Ralf; Podlesny, JoschaInspired from geological problems, we introduce a new geometrical setting for homogenization of a well known and well studied problem of an elliptic second order differential operator with jump condition on a multiscale network of interfaces. The geometrical setting is fractal and hence neither periodic nor stochastic methods can be applied to the study of such kind of multiscale interface problem. Instead, we use the fractal nature of the geometric structure to introduce smoothed problems and apply methods from a posteriori theory to derive an estimate for the order of convergence. Computational experiments utilizing an iterative homogenization approach illustrate that the theoretically derived order of convergenceof the approximate problems is close to optimal.
- ItemThe fractional p-Laplacian emerging from homogenization of the random conductance model with degenerate ergodic weights and unbounded-range jumps(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2018) Flegel, Franziska; Heida, MartinWe study a general class of discrete p-Laplace operators in the random conductance model with long-range jumps and ergodic weights. Using a variational formulation of the problem, we show that under the assumption of bounded first moments and a suitable lower moment condition on the weights, the homogenized limit operator is a fractional p-Laplace operator. Under strengthened lower moment conditions, we can apply our insights also to the spectral homogenization of the discrete Lapalace operator to the continuous fractional Laplace operator.
- ItemGENERIC for dissipative solids with bulk-interface interaction(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Heida, Martin; Thomas, MaritaThe modeling framework of GENERIC was originally introduced by Grmela and Öttinger for thermodynamically closed systems. It is phrased with the aid of the energy and entropy as driving functionals for reversible and dissipative processes and suitable geometric structures. Based on the definition functional derivatives we propose a GENERIC framework for systems with bulk-interface interaction and apply it to discuss the GENERIC structure of models for delamination processes.
- ItemHomogenization of a porous intercalation electrode with phase separation(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Heida, Martin; Landstorfer, Manuel; Liero, MatthiasIn this work, we derive a new model framework for a porous intercalation electrode with a phase separating active material upon lithium intercalation. We start from a microscopic model consisting of transport equations for lithium ions in an electrolyte phase and intercalated lithium in a solid active phase. Both are coupled through a Neumann--boundary condition modeling the lithium intercalation reaction. The active material phase is considered to be phase separating upon lithium intercalation. We assume that the porous material is a given periodic microstructure and perform analytical homogenization. Effectively, the microscopic model consists of a diffusion and a Cahn--Hilliard equation, whereas the limit model consists of a diffusion and an Allen--Cahn equation. Thus we observe a Cahn--Hilliard to Allen--Cahn transition during the upscaling process. In the sense of gradient flows, the transition goes in hand with a change in the underlying metric structure of the PDE system.
- ItemHomogenization theory for the random conductance model with degenerate ergodic weights and unbounded-range jumps(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2017) Flegel, Franziska; Heida, Martin; Slowik, MartinWe study homogenization properties of the discrete Laplace operator with random conductances on a large domain in Zd. More precisely, we prove almost-sure homogenization of the discrete Poisson equation and of the top of the Dirichlet spectrum. We assume that the conductances are stationary, ergodic and nearest-neighbor conductances are positive. In contrast to earlier results, we do not require uniform ellipticity but certain integrability conditions on the lower and upper tails of the conductances. We further allow jumps of arbitrary length. Without the long-range connections, the integrability condition on the lower tail is optimal for spectral homogenization. It coincides with a necessary condition for the validity of a local central limit theorem for the random walk among random conductances. As an application of spectral homogenization, we prove a quenched large deviation principle for the normalized and rescaled local times of the random walk in a growing box. Our proofs are based on a compactness result for the Laplacian’s Dirichlet energy, Poincaré inequalities, Moser iteration and two-scale convergence.
- ItemA mathematical model for Alzheimer's disease: An approach via stochastic homogenization of the Smoluchowski equation(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2019) Franchi, Bruno; Heida, Martin; Lorenzani, SilviaIn this note, we apply the theory of stochastic homogenization to find the asymptotic behavior of the solution of a set of Smoluchowski's coagulation-diffusion equations with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. This system is meant to model the aggregation and diffusion of β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) in the cerebral tissue, a process associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease. In contrast to the approach used in our previous works, in the present paper we account for the non-periodicity of the cellular structure of the brain by assuming a stochastic model for the spatial distribution of neurons. Further, we consider non-periodic random diffusion coefficients for the amyloid aggregates and a random production of Aβ in the monomeric form at the level of neuronal membranes.
- ItemOn a thermodynamic framework for developing boundary conditions for Korteweg fluids(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2019) Souček, Ondřej; Heida, Martin; Málek, JosefWe provide a derivation of several classes of boundary conditions for fluids of Korteweg-type using a simple and transparent thermodynamic approach that automatically guarentees that the derived boundary conditions are compatible with the second law of thermodynamics. The starting assumption of our approach is to describe the boundary of the domain as the membrane separating two different continua, one inside the domain, and the other outside the domain. With this viewpoint one may employ the framework of continuum thermodynamics involving singular surfaces. This approach allows us to identify, for various classes of surface Helmholtz free energies, the corresponding surface entropy production mechanisms. By establishing the constitutive relations that guarantee that the surface entropy production is non-negative, we identify a new class of boundary conditions, which on one hand generalizes in a nontrivial manner the Navier's slip boundary conditions, and on the other hand describes dynamic and static contact angle conditions. We explore the general model in detail for a particular case of Korteweg fluid where the Helmholtz free energy in the bulk is that of a van der Waals fluid. We perform a series of numerical experiments to document the basic qualitative features of the novel boundary conditions and their practical applicability to model phenomena such as the contact angle hysteresis.
- ItemOn convergences of the squareroot approximation scheme to the Fokker-Planck operator(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2017) Heida, MartinWe study the qualitative convergence properties of a finite volume scheme that recently was proposed by Lie, Fackeldey and Weber [SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications 2013 (34/2)] in the context of conformation dynamics. The scheme was derived from physical principles and is called the squareroot approximation (SQRA) scheme. We show that solutions to the SQRA equation converge to solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation using a discrete notion of G-convergence. Hence the squareroot approximation turns out to be a usefull approximation scheme to the Fokker-Planck equation in high dimensional spaces. As an example, in the special case of stationary Voronoi tessellations we use stochastic two-scale convergence to prove that this setting satisfies the G-convergence property. In particular, the class of tessellations for which the G-convergence result holds is not trivial.
- ItemOn quenched homogenization of long-range random conductance models on stationary ergodic point processes(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2022) Heida, MartinWe study the homogenization limit on bounded domains for the long-range random conductance model on stationary ergodic point processes on the integer grid. We assume that the conductance between neares neighbors in the point process are always positive and satisfy certain weight conditions. For our proof we use long-range two-scale convergence as well as methods from numerical analysis of finite volume methods.
- ItemPrecompact probability spaces in applied stochastic homogenization(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Heida, MartinWe provide precompactness and metrizability of the probability space Ω for random measures and random coefficients such as they widely appear in stochastic homogenization and are typically given from data. We show that these properties are enough to implement the convenient two-scale formalism by Zhikov and Piatnitsky (2006). To further demonstrate the benefits of our approach we provide some useful trace and extension operators for Sobolev functions on Ω, which seem not known in literature. On the way we close some minor gaps in the Sobolev theory on Ω which seemingly have not been proven up to date.
- ItemThe space of bounded variation with infinite-dimensional codomain(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2016) Heida, Martin; Patterson, Robert I.A.; Renger, D.R. MichielWe study functions of bounded variation with values in a Banach or in a metric space. We provide several equivalent notions of variations and provide the notion of a time derivative in this abstract setting. We study four distinct topologies on the space of bounded variations and provide some insight into the structure of these topologies. In particular, we study the meaning of convergence, duality and regularity for these topologies and provide some useful compactness criteria, also related to the classical Aubin-Lions theorem. We finally provide some useful applications to stochastic processes.
- ItemStochastic homogenization of Lambda-convex gradient flows(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2019) Heida, Martin; Neukamm, Stefan; Varga, MarioIn this paper we present a stochastic homogenization result for a class of Hilbert space evolutionary gradient systems driven by a quadratic dissipation potential and a Λ-convex energy functional featuring random and rapidly oscillating coefficients. Specific examples included in the result are Allen--Cahn type equations and evolutionary equations driven by the p-Laplace operator with p ∈ in (1, ∞). The homogenization procedure we apply is based on a stochastic two-scale convergence approach. In particular, we define a stochastic unfolding operator which can be considered as a random counterpart of the well-established notion of periodic unfolding. The stochastic unfolding procedure grants a very convenient method for homogenization problems defined in terms of (Λ-)convex functionals.
- ItemStochastic homogenization of rate-dependent models of monotone type in plasticity(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2017) Heida, Martin; Nesenenko, SergiyIn this work we deal with the stochastic homogenization of the initial boundary value problems of monotone type. The models of monotone type under consideration describe the deformation behaviour of inelastic materials with a microstructure which can be characterised by random measures. Based on the Fitzpatrick function concept we reduce the study of the asymptotic behaviour of monotone operators associated with our models to the problem of the stochastic homogenization of convex functionals within an ergodic and stationary setting. The concept of Fitzpatricks function helps us to introduce and show the existence of the weak solutions for rate-dependent systems. The derivations of the homogenization results presented in this work are based on the stochastic two-scale convergence in Sobolev spaces. For completeness, we also present some two-scale homogenization results for convex functionals, which are related to the classical Gamma-convergence theory.
- ItemStochastic homogenization of rate-independent systems(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2016) Heida, MartinWe study the stochastic and periodic homogenization 1-homogeneous convex functionals. We proof some convergence results with respect to stochastic twoscale convergence, which are related to classical Gamma-convergence results. The main result is a general lim inf-estimate for a sequence of 1-homogeneous functionals and a two-scale stability result for sequences of convex sets. We apply our results to the homogenization of rate-independent systems with 1-homogeneous dissipation potentials and quadratic energies. In these applications, both the energy and the dissipation potential have an underlying stochastic microscopic structure. We study the particular homogenization problems of Prandlt-Reuss plasticity, Coulomb friction on a macroscopic surface and Coulomb friction on microscopic fissures.
- ItemStochastic homogenization on irregularly perforated domains(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Heida, Martin; Jahnel, Benedikt; Vu, Anh DucWe study stochastic homogenization of a quasilinear parabolic PDE with nonlinear microscopic Robin conditions on a perforated domain. The focus of our work lies on the underlying geometry that does not allow standard homogenization techniques to be applied directly. Instead we prove homogenization on a regularized geometry and demonstrate afterwards that the form of the homogenized equation is independent from the regularization. Then we pass to the regularization limit to obtain the anticipated limit equation. Furthermore, we show that Boolean models of Poisson point processes are covered by our approach.
