Abstract
Within the subproject of the Ludwig-Franzius Institute, conducted as part of the joint project OpenRAVE, methods for the analysis and representation of wind, wave, and current data were developed. A central outcome is a sea state module that has been implemented in the BSH sea state portal and provides corrected sea state maps for the German Bight. The basis consists of in-situ measurement data, which are combined with numerical forecasts (CWAM) and optimized through specially developed routines. The scientific and technical work focused in particular on (i) the analysis of wind–wave correlations, (ii) the investigation of wave–current interaction, and (iii) the derivation of forecasts for the operability of work vessels. With the project extension OpenRAVE_ML, machine learning methods for large-scale sea state forecasting were established. Here, the model serves as transfer functions between local sea state information and the large-scale derivation of sea state conditions.
