Abstract

On the basis of analyses and property measurements on 144 samples of container glass originating from all European countries from the years 1982 to 1988, the average composition of the glasses from single countries and the total average for all European countries have been determined. It follows that container glasses from West Europe have about 1% less alkali contents than glasses from East Europe. The main trend in the development of the container glass composition is to introduce MgO; modern container glass is melted with limestone and dolomite. The tendency to decrease the alkali content, prevailing at the beginning of the eighties, has essentially stopped.
