Sand-potash-dolomite glass batches with the addition of 4 wt% CdO, CdS, CdSe, CdCO3, CdO+Se, and CdSe+CdS, respectively, were heated in a gradient furnace to final temperatures between 550 and 1050 °C. Further parameters were the melting atmosphere (normal air, nitrogen, and air loaded with 30 vol.% H2O, respectively) and the batch water content (up to about 10 % H2O). X-ray diffraction showed the nature and sequence of the different phases obtained. The strongest impact on the reactions occurring had the batch water content, however, in some cases the melting atmosphere also influenced the stability limits of the compounds. This was especially the case when CdSe- or CdS-containing compounds were added as their oxidation behavior strongly depends on the oxygen partial pressure (air and nitrogen atmosphere, respectively).ger
