Abstract
In the publicly funded project AHEAD the improvements of a high-resolution lighting design for better camera detection were investigated to improve the camera vision of a highly automated test vehicle. The validation is prepared by a 46 km digital twin with town, rural and motorway roads, under- and overpasses, junctions, roundabouts and a tunnel, which were built up according to measured 3D world data by 3D Mapping Solutions in 3 different levels of detail. The SOL-Matrix Light simulation of the TU Dortmund University allows a real-time, high resolution light distribution generation in dynamic virtual scenarios. Also, it controls the light distribution of the real test vehicle. Three camera recording streams and a motion unit are used to self-localize the FORVIA HELLA test vehicle to evaluate online and in post-processing the improvements in the object detection and to analyze possible safety improvements. Improving acceptance and a more energy-efficient light distribution are additional targets. Initial simulation results show significant improvements in object detection for automated driving and energy reduction. The dynamic validation of the system approach of high-resolution illumination and multi-channel camera detection shows improvements in traffic safety and in energy saving.
