For the research field of corrosion of aluminium, the project is complimentary to much of the earlier research. Focus on aluminium corrosion research largely has been done on effect of alloy composition and thermomechanical treatment, while this project has focused on corrosion problems in practical use of aluminium in marine constructions. While earlier research on corrosion protection of aluminium has focused on items that can be surface treated with chemicals and factory applied coatings, this project has focused on large constructions that must be treated by blast cleaning and spray painting. MarinAl has therefore produced much expertise on practical use of aluminium in marine constructions, both in the industry and in research. For the industry, the project has provided answers to problems and uncertainties around the use of aluminium in marine constructions. Even though aluminium already to some extent is used, some suboptimal solutions have been specified that has resulted in corrosion or excessive protection or materials use. The project may therefore contribute to increased utilization and more successful use of aluminium in marine industries. For society, it will always be beneficial to use the most suitable materials, with as little need for maintenance as possible. Establishing strengths, benefits, and limits for aluminium will potentially reduce climate footprint and life cycle costs.eng
