Abstract

Using the thermogravimetry, differential thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis to study the behaviour, between room temperature and 1200 °C, of B2O3, H3BO3, tincalconite (Na2O * 2 B2O3 * 5 H2O), ulexite (Na2O * 2 CaO * 5 B2O3 * 16 H2O) and colemanite (2 Ca0 * 3 B2O3 * 5 H2O). Boric acid loss of H3BO3 may be seen even at 100 °C and this increases with the water content of the atmosphere. B2O3 also shows such losses but tin-calconite, ulexite and colemanite do not. At higher temperatures volatilization from the melt may, according to the initial system, produce vapour containing H3BO3, HBO2, B2O3 or NaBO2, mixture of these components or various dimers and trimers. Water vapour in the atmosphere considerably accelerates the rate of volatilization from melts of all raw materials. Colemanite showed the most favourable behaviour in terms both of total loss and the effect of water vapour. The behaviour of these melts of pure raw materials gives some principal information but for the melting of commercial Blasses other factors must also be considered.
