Some thoughts on the strength of lightweight glass containers

Abstract

In order to produce lightweight glass containers with optimum strength properties, attention must first of all be paid to the glass quality and to the working properties. Furthermore, contamination and abuse of the hot glass surface, both during and immediately after the production process, have to be kept to a minimum. Here the use of modern carbon-based materials is to be recommended. Finally, consideration is given to those chemical components in glass which lower the mechanical strength and those which, on application to hot glass surfaces, increase strength by slowing down crack propagation. Um leichtgewichtige Glasbehälter mit guten Festigkeitseigenschaften herzustellen, muß auf die Glasqualität und Glasverarbeitungseigenschaften geachtet werden. Eine Kontaminierung und Verletzung der Glasoberfläche während und unmittelbar nach der Flaschenherstellung muß so gering wie möglich gehalten werden. Hier ist der Einsatz von modernen Graphit- und Kohlenstoffwerkstoffen ratsam. Zum Schluß werden die Glaskomponenten betrachtet, welche die mechanische Festigkeit herabsetzen und solche, die durch eine Verlangsamung der Rißausbreitung die Festigkeit erhöhen.
