Abstract

The paper intends to present a compact survey of the numerical analysis method today most frequently applied, the finite element method. The introduction points to economical advantages the method offers, and gives an account of several continuum phenomena which can be treated. A description of the historical development follows to which engineers and mathematicians have contributed. The next section is dedicated to the practical handling of the method by showing examples. The final section deals with present tendencies of development.
