Abstract
The increase in the coefficient of thermal expansion and the free volume concentration at Tg of vitreous systems. The indirect Archimedes method has been used to measure the densities of numerous glasses above and below Tg. The transformation temperature, Tg, can be considered to be the temperature at which elastic Bonds can be broken and free-volume created. There is an interesting relation between the product αg * Tg and the elastic constants at Tg. The creation of free volume causes an increase in the ex-pansion coefficient at Tg and an increase in the elastic potential of the melt. The elastic constants are related to Δα * Tg and to the magnitude of αg * Tg. Formation of free volume can be treated as a first order reaction and the free volume concentration xL at Tg can be calculated from Δα * Tg using a simple equation. If the activation energy of forming free volume is related to Tom ( = kg-Atom), it is identical to the heat of evaporation which is proportional to the atomic surface energy. The parameters Δα * Tg and xL depend not only on the elastic constants and α * Tg but also on the structure of the melt.
