Abstract

This report highlights our work in DarEXA-F, which focused on optimizing the GENE code using modern architectural advancements. We investigate the compressability of network traffic, the use of SmartNICs for the purpose, and the implementation of network compression in the MPI standard. Further, we also investigate the use of FPGAs to improve the performance of the computation itself as well as the use of mixed precision. Overall, we are able to provide new directions for adjusting the GENE family of codes to modern architecture and architecture trends, and also — with the proposal of a standard extension — to offer a sustainable path towards maintaining the project’s achievements.
