The finishing of glass surfaces is of increasing economic importance involving beside mechanical strength also chemical durability of the coatings. The decoration of commercial glass might find broader apphcation if it were resistant to the exposure to dishwashing programs. Especially noble-metal decorations are damaged in dishwashing machines for reasons that so far had not been clarified. Important parameters are the composition of the noble-metal preparation, the technique of application, the composition of the base glass, its pretreatment, and, finally, time, temperature and atmosphere in the firing process.ger
