dc.description.abstract1. Current State of Science and Technology: For the new edition of a purely electric railbus featuring a modular, interchangeable passenger cabin (e.g., replaceable with a container), a modern, compact braking system was developed in accordance with the current state of the art. Already during the development phase, not only the requirements of Phase 1 (driver-operated mode) were met, but also those of Phase 2 (autonomous operation) were taken into account. As a result, the braking system is future-ready. 2. Rationale and Objectives of the Study: The motivation and objective of the project were not only to integrate modern braking technology into the vehicle, but also to initiate internal innovation processes at Knorr-Bremse. The project enabled the development of solutions for which, under typical customer-projects, no resources would have been available. Particularly noteworthy are the development of a compact air supply unit and a novel Mg-brake, both of which contribute significantly to technological advancement. 3. Methodology: The project relied on Knorr-Bremse’s established and proven processes in the areas of calculation, design, and project management, as well as on the company’s modern tool landscape. 4. Results: The demonstrator vehicle developed as part of this funded project is a compelling testament to the constructive collaboration and positive working atmosphere within the consortium. Although it is a one-off vehicle, the braking system was developed using state-of-the-art methods, thoroughly tested, and successfully integrated. This was confirmed by the successful static commissioning in May 2025. 5. Conclusion and Application Potential: The project goal was successfully achieved. The results highlight the importance of increased funding for university research in the field of rail vehicle technology — particularly through the provision of additional resources for motivated academic staff. For the participating industry partners, such funding projects represent a significant benefit: the innovative approach and high level of motivation among all participants lead to practical, forward-looking solutions. This was also confirmed by the successful presentation of the vehicle to an international audience at InnoTrans 2024, which received numerous positive responses. The braking system developed for this railbus can be adapted with minimal effort for use in other, similar vehicles and is also suitable for future autonomous rail vehicles.eng
